So this has been bugging my mind recently. I did not want to make a simple status update about it, because it needs to be fully explains, and I want to her what you guys think. This is just my thought process on text, not really a theory.

    ---------------------------------

So with all eyes focused at Decay, we often forget corruption. Lets pause and take a look back, shall we?

So the corruption starts 1000 years ago. The portal opens and the corruption and undead get released! Oh noes the world's gonna end!

Ok wait so hold up. First we need to go back a little bit. The nether. What is the nether in terms of lore?

Well, we have the war of the realms. Light is fighting Dark and that gives us Corruption. That war has pretty much been eternal. So has the nether always existed?

Well, we have 2 different possibilities that happen when you die. One, you go down to the nether and get corrupted. Or two, you get stuck up topside as a ghost. Like Gale.

    ----------------------------

So, the nether is the place of the undead and the corrupted. But what exactly does it mean to be corrupted?

    Lets keep going.

Portal opens, big shablango! The miners run back to Ancient Nemract and the undead fallow them, destroying AN. So the undead are dead guys who went down to the nether and came back up. But that's not the point of the thread. We know the undead, but what the heck is the corruption?

    No really, what is it?

Firstly, it brings in-animate objects to life. Such as corrupted apples and corrupted ore. Also, when you die and are corrupted, you don't go down to the nether and back up again, your just re-awaken where you died.

But that's not my question. My question is how it spreads

    ---------------------------

Really, think about it. How does the corruption spread?

Does it spread via bite? Cuz I highly doubt we have a random zombie going and biting coal ore. Sooooo what?

Is it like everything got corrupted at once? The portal opened and suddenly things are corrupted? Like a sonic boom?

That would not make sense either. Cuz why did only certain things get corrupted and not everything?

Is it like an air-borne virus? If it was like that, how do we have undead residents all the way on dead island, super far away from the portal?

    -----------------------

It could have been brought by the ghost ship, but how does that even work? Like, I thought zombies are stupid. How do they sail a boat and steal treasure???

Ok, so airborn virus is still a possibility, but wait... Apples don't breath. Neither does ore. So that won't work.

    What else we got?

    ----------------------

Corrupter of Worlds. CoW. He came out from the portal, right? Since his name is legit the guy who corrupts things, is the Corruption like a magic that he sends out?

Well, you can't even go into his cave without a specially purified helmet. But then I ask, ain't he smart? He specifically fills his cave with magic. He specifically does all these things. So if he has all this power to corrupt stuff, why corrupt a chicken? Look in the animal dungeon. We have normal every day animals being corrupted. What's the point in that?

Does he just want to corrupt everyone and everything? If so, why the heck does he live in a cave next to ToL? If not, why does he want to corrupt farm animals, I mean, theres not strategic advantage for his army.

And lets say the corruption is a magic that dos resonate from him, how do we have corrupted guys on the islands and in remote places? That can't be it...

    -------------------------------

What if it was like contact based? That would explain people "hiding from the corruption"

But wouldn't that cause the very soil the corrupted walk to become corrupted? I guess it would make sense for the corrupted ore, since the ore that started to be mined got corrupted.

But why are you not corrupted? I mean, you have gotten hit by the corrupted many times.

    --------------------------------

Ok, what if its like a pulsing electro-magnetic field. When the portal opened it was a big pulse. The corruption "spreads" every time it pulses again. The pulse locks onto life forces.

Ok... Everything seems cool so fall.

But what about the ore? And (debatable) the apples?

    No, not this either...

    --------------------------------

Now I am not trying to say anything is wrong here. Nothing is wrong. I am just trying to understand.

What do you guys think the corruption is? As I think more I will edit the thread with my thought process, but I want to just post it and get it out. Feel free to comment and let me know your thoughts!

    Big shablango. Nuff said.

Jk. Remember that game called Terraria? It has something similar to this that spreads. Maybe its Wiki (or Wikia, or Gamepedia) will tell us how it works in that game, and that could give us an idea of how it spreads. Not saying that they are the same, but it might give us an idea. I really have no clue.

Or maybe it never did spread (*X-Files theme plays*)

    (jk it probably did)

    (probably)

I never played Terraria, so I can't comment. And what do you mean by "never spread"? I am pretty sure the corruption did indeed spread form the nether to Wynn...

Well, I think that the corruption spreads by contact. I have heared a lot of times "the corruption is approaching", like he is consuming everything he touches.
Also, dead island was "corrputed" by eggs and a giant creature, am I wrong?

Here is what I think. We have 2 Realms, light and dark, but the third is our own. What I believe is that there is a 4th realm, the Nether. I like to think of the Nether as something similar to our realm, it was just another battleground for the forces of light and dark to fight. Due to the dark and light fighting it brought the destruction of that world. Now about corruption, to me, I see corruption as a disease, it spreads, by contact. When the Nether portal opened, it allowed perhaps a magical disease from another dimension into the one we live in. When this foreign disease came into Wynn it began to spread and develop, in the process creating monstrosities. So to sum it up, darkness and light are going around waging war on possibly many dimensions, one of which is likely to be the Nether. The dimension that we call the Nether contained foreign magical diseases that spread and corrupt all things.

    But wait...

What if the Nether was just a resting place for the Ancients until it was Corrupted?

What if the Corruption is climbing up through the layers of rock very slowly, but is using the Nether Portal as a way to get quickly to the surface?

    Wynn = doomed

The contact theory might make sense. Hiding and the corruption and what not. But does a contact based disease have the ability to bring inanimate objects to life?

I think the corruption spreads from the portal like an electro-magnetic field that spreads as an obsolete unless it hits a massive life force or a magical thing generated by either a magical item or being.

I thought of that, but how does that bring in-animate objects (apples, ore, ect) to life?

Remember, I am not saying anything is wrong, I am just trying to think.

Also, will add the contact and mag field theories

    Found it:

Kelight: It is believed that this creature was one of the leaders during the discovery of the Nether portal...

By leaders, I was thinking that it meant he lead the discovery of the portal... like, one of the people who went into the Nether. Or maybe CoW was just the leader of the Corruption's army.
