I just started playing and can barely get out of the first city without being killed. Should I stay around the first town and get stronger? Gather a party? I cant seem to make it far without dying

If you're struggling, grind a bit for levels and obtain better gear. The area north of Ragni has mainly level 1 Weak Zombies, aside from the occasional Decrepit Sewers Key Guardian, so you can grind there for a bit safely. Also remember to open loot chests whenever you see them, since they're a good source of stuff (emeralds, gear, etc.). Your health goes up by +5 per level, but this increase quickly becomes dwarfed by the health bonuses from armor - having at-level armor and weapons is the best way to get stronger.

Incidentally, which class are you playing? (that will help us tailor our advice a little more)

Also, how far is "barely get out of the first city"? Can you reach the entrance to Nivla Woods?

Im starting as archer, and I can make it to the entrance to Nivila Woods, and I've also made it a little ways along the coast (by Katoa Ranch and Maltic)

Now looking at the map and the levels labeled my mistake was probably going near Maltic (it says lvl 10 and im currently at 5)

So that's kinda my fault for not paying attention to the recommended levels on the map lol

Alright. In general, you can judge the level range of an area based on the mobs around there. Archer is the glassiest class and the only one with single-target melee, so the first 20 or so levels may be unusually difficult (you get Bomb Arrow at level 21, which helps quite a bit).
