WARNING: wall of text inbound. This was originally supposed to be a reply, but now it's a full on thread speculating about Gavel. Post your own comments below :)

Interesting... So 0 is 1%, and 100 is 0.7%? I'll go figure out the exact rate later xD anyways, I'm betting that the bonus from said skill point will increase. Last time I checked, I believe defense increased fire damage. So it'll start off with higher defense and less fire damage per point, and as you level up the amount of damage will increase, while the amount of defense will decrease per point.
This is why I'm going to probably do a fire/water build, as the bonus fire damage from max defense, combined with bonus spell damage from water should give a freaking amazing build. If I was mistaken and the defense stat increases fire resistance along with general defense (which I sincerely hope it doesn't) then I'll have to go with a fire/water/thunder build, as the identifications from earth and water would cancel each other out (earth has +dam -spell dam, water has -dam +spell dam) while thunder will increase damage instead of spell damage, at least it won't be decreasing spell damage.
Also, I can't wait to see what the new spells are, I'm assuming there's going to be a healing spell for each class? I've also heard that to buff Mage, you'll be increasing the general stat damage for meteor and teleport, which would work. I'm also HOPING that any new spells added would be allowed to replace current ones, rather than simply add new ones with a four click combo instead of 3.

It would be quite interesting if there was a different endgame weapon for both each element and each class, so that there would be a large variety in builds. Having one neutral weapon per class wouldn't be nearly as interesting :/ also I have to say I somewhat agree with your choice of earth as attack and fire as defense. As it stands, having a heavy, melee-oriented attack type makes more sense as earth. I'm betting that fire was simply the left over element, and simply didn't have a place in the other categories. If it did have a category, I would have assumed it to be a fast, medium damage type, sort of in between thunder and earth.

I also went into the Diablo wiki, looking at some different things. At first I was sincerely hoping for that crafting system they had, so that getting endgame would be so much cooler. But then I realized that the powders, with the amount and tiers there are, would be the crafting system. However, I'm hoping that potions will have a sort of brewing system, so that each person could try for some cool stuff. Maybe increased damage potions, that could be customized by drink speed vs duration vs strength of effect.

Let's see... What else is there to question about gavel... Oh yeah! So, it does seem interesting that the defense stat had a little effect on the side, so I'm going to guess at what each one is.

    Defense: linked to fire
Stat increases general defense and fire damage
    Weapons-
Increase defense, health, fire damage, health regen, life steal, and have about average stats in terms of damage.

    Strength: linked to earth
Increases general damage, and I'm guessing increases earth damage?
    Weapons-
    Increase damage, strength
Decreases spell damage, and low attack speed, seems to probably have some other unique identification, currently I think poison.

    Intelligence: linked to water
Decreases spell cost, and increases spell healing
    Weapon-
Gives mana regen, mana steal, has low attack damage, intelligence.

    Agility: linked to air
Decreases chance of getting hit, and possibly air damage? Pure speculation
Weapon- increases walk speed, agility, and some others I'm not sure about. Usually high attack speed, with mid-low damage?

    Dexterity: linked to thunder
Increases chance of double damage, and probably thunder damage
Weapon- increases damage, very fast attack speed, possibly a linked ID of explosive damage? Its weapons have damage values of 1-100 and such, like the melon cutter.

    Next: armor!

Now, we've got our normal armor, our set armor, and what I believe to be our elemental armor (due to air element in Salted's teaser 13 being a piece of armor)

Normal armor: probably the same, with general stats, average ID's and possibly a slight affiliation with an element, such as bonus defense against said element.

Set armor: a new type of armor that's going to be released, were you get bonuses for each piece of the set you're wearing, bonus only applies for 2+ pieces of the set. I'm hoping
That there'll be some endgame set armor, with lower defense values than other armor but much better bonus if you have a full set. Either going to be OP or UP as endgame

Elemental armor: this is my speculation, hasn't been announced or anything. I'm betting it'll be armor with a general defense value, followed by some increased resistance against half the elements, maybe decreased resistance against the other half. I'm betting that they'll have some IDs that apply to a specific element, and will probably be the general endgame

Personally I'm hoping for a ton of endgame gear, such as 5 elemental sets, 1 neutral set (basic set) and 4-5 set sets, for major variety!

Hmmm, what else was covered in Gavel? That's all I can think of for now :D if you read all this, comment down below for your own speculations!

Also @Salted theres currently no records left of the small teaser in which you showed the defense point in the new compass, do you think that you could post a new one somewhere.

More ontopic, I like how upgrading defense gets weaker later on because as of now, effective health increases exponentially while damage reduction scales linearly. It's a needed change.

See, I was hoping that the main difference in my post would be that I actually put effort into it, trying to compile most of that which I knew/guessed at was going to happen in gavel. Ah well :/
