Hi from the technical modding community! There is a huge issue right now as two big griefing groups, The Fifth Column and MLPI, are actively targeting public and private Minecraft servers. Using internet-wide scanners, they hunt down and wipe out vulnerable servers, all while pretending to 'teach a lesson' about security or piracy or pretending like the servers they grief deserved it.

These attackers use advanced bots, like one called Copenheimer and MLPI Scanner, to scan the internet for open Minecraft server ports. Even if your server isn't listed or you think it's private, they can still find it if it's open to the public. They often target servers set to "offline mode" (cracked servers), where the game doesn't check if a person owns the account they're logging in with. This lets them use bots to log in as admins or operators and take full control of the server. Once they get in, they use automated tools to destroy the server by flooding it with lava, spamming the chat, corrupting world files, and ruining builds. They may also trick players by joining Discord servers or leaving signs on the server, claiming they can "restore" the world if you open a support ticket, but in reality, they're just trying to cause more harm and make fun of innocent Minecraft players who already were victims of this bullying.

/whitelist on is the command you need to run right away to keep strangers out, so type /whitelist on and only add your friends with /whitelist add (for example /whitelist add catroman05)

Next, you need to go into your server.properties file and turn on "online mode" to stop hackers from logging in as you, or at least install a security plugin like AuthMe if you are running a cracked server. Finally, protect your hard work by keeping off-site backups of your world, which allows you to easily undo any damage if a griefer does manage to get in.

Sometimes I wonder about humanity... Its a block game. Why do people feel the need to do this stuff?

I think it's so messed up. Hope everyone can spread the word so fewer players can be caught off guard, and in the meantime, I'll do what I can with my friends to stop them.
