Defense Stats?

I want to wear Riverflow, which are boots that have -260 base thunder defense and also -26% thunder defense. Also, they have +175 water defense and +22% water defense. There are a couple other stats on them as well, but those don't have to do with defense.

Before I put them on, all my elemental defense stats are positive.

But after I put them on, all of my element defenses decrease, not just thunder. Air and earth go down especially, with air going from 210 to -50 and earth from 265 to 5. Even water goes down, from 660 to 575, when it should go up.

Why are they affecting all of my elemental defenses so much? I know that thunder should decrease, but I don't get why everything else decreases too. Is it a glitch? Or am I missing something?

On another note, how much does it matter if an elemental defense is negative? Does it make you take extra damage from mobs that deal that type of damage?

Oh, that's disappointing. Is there any way to see my actual stats then? Or do I just calculate by hand haha

 

The compass is broken in many ways. Especially the defense part.
