Defense Stat Variation

So, when i equip Adamantite, i have -350 fire defense, -160 air, -190 earth, -80 thunder, -270 water, even though the stats say -80 fire, -80 air, -30 earth, -80 thunder, -80 water, why is this happening and how can i combat it? I'm already using kratke, but it brings it to -150 fire, -80 air, -70 earth, -40 thunder, -110 water. Then, when i equip illuminite, it goes to -90 fire -20 air -10 earth, +20 thunder, and -50 water, even though illuminite only affects thunder. Why does this happen?

How? because of the stat increases?

 

because adamantite kills your defenses and without those hp is useless
