Choosing Moderators (discussion)

Currently, Moderators on Wynncraft are hand-picked by the staff team and there is no application system. This thread is to discuss the pros and cons of this system and ways to make it better. This is NOT an official thread, nor is this thread asking the staff team to make staff applications. This thread is also NOT me asking to be a moderator.

The pros of hand-picking players to be moderators with no application system:
-Moderators are all quite good and trusted by the community
-Most Moderators are well known
-No lengthy application process, so the Admins don't have to sift through thousands of applications.
-Rarely ever is there a bad moderator

The cons:
-Must be fairly well known to be chosen
-You need to hope the staff notice you helping players and being kind if you want to be a Moderator
-Players that could be great moderators but are low level/don't play often/don't use forums/aren't well known will have a low chance of being chosen

The pros of an application system for choosing moderators:
-All players can try
-Don't have to be well known in order to prove how much you could help
-Staff WILL read your app, you don't have to "hope" they see you

The cons:
-Players may have a good application but be bad staff
-Tons of apps the staff would have to sift through
-Your app may get swallowed by the void of bad applications
-Moderators won't be very well known or trusted at the start
-Possibly too many staff?

Of course, I doubt the staff will make an applicaion system anytime soon, and I can't find any other way to have high quality staff and have it be a fair chance for everyone at the same time. What do you guys think about the way Moderators are chosen?

 

While applications are more fair for players who are mostly unknown, apps can lead to having many bad staff members and can lead to those mods possibly abusing their "ban hammer."
I think it's better safe than sorry.

 

There's another Con for application. Generic recreation of apps that have a few or most words changed. So somebody can take a generic fill in the blank and give examples of what makes them the best person in the world.

This post is pointless, the reason staff are hand picked and not selected from a wall of applications, is so that the staff are actually known through the community and so that they are not just random players who join and go "MAKE ME MOD!"

 

Being well known has nothing to do with being chosen, i would know as i wasn't known anywhere but to some traders.

Jamer's highest class is around level 50
Lower levels in general won't usually have the knowledge to be effective, same with not playing often/using forums.
Players get chosen even with this, so that point is kind of invalid.
Applications leave alot of room for people to abuse power immediately, among other things.

Moral of the story, if its not broken dont fix it.

 

I think we have enough moderators as it is.
If we say there are about 15-20 active moderators at the moment, then that is a whole ~2% of the current active community. That is like a moderator for every fifty people!

I don't think the wynncraft community can be trusted with mod applications :^)

 

1. A mod knew you pretty well though, and the argument is for unknown by anyone

2. Jamers a bad example because he personally knew Grian from Crafted Movie like 4 years ago.

I do agree though that the current system is fine and doesn't need a change

You disproved your own suggestion, my friend.
There are many more cons to applications. Who knows what kind of legitimately-corrupt moderator could come out of this? The few times we've chosen poorly, things got really really bad. This just increases that chance.
Also, we have plenty of mods right now. Moderating involves activity, and to just have a random person in there who doesn't rack up a single ban would be a waste of time.
So yeah, overall a bad idea.

I didn't necessarily say this was a suggestion. I just wanted to see what the community thought about applications vs. hand picking.

 

This thread won't go anywhere after this, unless there is a flame war. The current system will remain until grian decides to change it. I'm closing it.
