Cave Story was created by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, in 2004.
The game is a Metroidvania where you play as Quote, an amnesiac robot that explores an island he wakes up in.
As the game goes, more of the story gets unveiled, the reason he is in the island, what's going on in the present, as you meet characters with... interesting designs, like Balrog, who was designed after a fucking bar of soap.
The game's strongest points are:
the Music
made with a program called OrgMaker, created by Pixel too, therefore the music quite unique, not to mention that it got remade by Nicalis thrice, first for the WiiWare, next for Steam PC with Cave Story +, and then in a fully 3D remake for the 3DS (which doesn't look very good...) meaning the game has a total of 3 versions of the OST at the moment, with Cave Story + having all of them
The Story
I won't spoil much because this is exactly the strongest point of the game, the story. It has a lot of characters with their own past and backstories, not to mention there are 3 endings, one where everyone but you and one of the characters die, another one where a few get saved, and another one where everyone but 2 mimiga (a race of rabbit people who take a major role in the story), some guy at the end which is also relevant to the story and, I guess, the countless monsters you killed through the adventure
The original Freeware version is free
You can download the original for free in a Cave Story tribute site I think, and Pixel himself gave the game for free, so you don't even need to pay to experience it (but you will have less options, like the lack of the challenges Nicalis added and the remastered graphics and remastered and new soundtracks)

The game was also pretty much one of the games that started the Indie Era, as it is one of the first one to succeed internationally
(however, keeping mind the only official translations are the japanese and english ones, the rest are fan translations (I think) so don't expect 100% accurate stuff if you don't download it in english or japanese)

I’ve heard of it and seen some boss battles, but I’m not quite sure what it’s about. It just seems like UnderTale except with guns and humanoid rabbits.

 

this one came by 2004 tho, so undertale would the one who copied in this case
also it did inspire undertale a bit
its really cool to play tho, if you havent already, you can do it for free by downloading the freeware version, or buying the other versions (Wiiware, 3D(S) and +)
the music is also fantastic, and the original soundtrack used its own program to be created, OrgMaker probs the reason the music is pretty unique
it was also pretty much the game (or one of) that started the indie era

so yeah wtf are u waiting for give a try to this beautiful gem

 

Maybe. I just have so many other games to finish right now that I'm not quite sure when I'll be able to finally get to it.

 

the game isnt very long tho
its about 8 hours long if you rush through it
multiplied by about 2.5 as there are 3 endings (bad ending, obtained by the point you beat the egg corridor? and escaping with kazuma, normal ending by beating the undead core, and the good one by beating ballos)
the good ending is a bit complex to get tho, so i recommend getting the normal ending first and then doing the game again while following a small guide on what to do to get good ending
