Cannot load in character at all

When I click to load my character or after a while of playing I get a connection error with messages like:

internal exception: io.netty.handler.codec.decoderexception: java.io.ioexception: packet 0/67 (xh) was larger than i expected, found 1 bytes extra whilst reading packet 67

I play on vanilla 1.20.1
