the documentation has been taking a while. it turns out that. languages are hard. and i have yet to be consumed by the necessary week-long hyperfocus i'd need to churn out the book. it's only a matter of time, but for now, take these. they'll probably be in the final documentation too, but for now they serve as evidence of just how weird everything has gotten in the back-end, and how much of a nightmare it'll be to accurately compile it.

high gavellian has officially hit the stage where it feels "real," in that messy organic sense where you can tell things are working according to some kind of structure, but the details are bogged in all this naturalistic chaos. good thing for the language. bad thing for me, trying to describe it.

anyway, translations. these help me understand my pet monster.

^ most unhinged sentence i've ever written

i don't even think elephants exist in wynncraft. please forgive me if they do.

my "have" construction. i thought it was so wacky and neat when i came up with it.

this one permanently broke me i think. i have not been okay ever since i ran it. understanding what an "internally-headed relative clause" was directly led me to that unhinged translation up top

this one's pretty normal (ignore word three) so i'm going to keep talking about IHRC's. computer people metaphor: imagine you're initializing a variable before you declare it. then, later, when you do declare it, the variable is thus already retroactively initialized with itself. that's a bad metaphor and i don't know enough CS to make a good one. but the tl;dr is that it's actual black magic that the human brain just smooths over.

subjunctives yay. kugyu is one of may favourite words in high gavellian, it just has a nice mouth-feel.

retroactively changed a bunch of <ei> to <é> at some point. aesthetics, i think? remember when aesthetics were a concern. remember when i still had the love of beauty in my heart

i could have spelled it <meylpol> and had it basically be 1:1 with the english pronounciation but. eh. too: the copula doesn't actually need to be here. the word for "tree" basically being "silly" was unintentional. but i think it's funny. also <th> makes an /f/ sound, it just happens that an /f/ sounds like a theta here. long story.

there's nothing overtly wrong with this translation its vibes are just off. the sentence may just be haunted. sorry that i let it on to your computer.

i was so happy when i translated this. look at how normal she is. i want to lift it up and kiss it. when i die she shall be acknowledged as my next of kin, to inherit my wealth and titles.

the order of lines in the gloss is:

    _____________

    High Gavellian Script
(Romanized Example, if the next one doesn't all fit on a single line)

    Romanized Script
    phonetic transcription
morpheme-by-morpheme translation (this IS the one WITH some words in CAPS)

    "Free translation."

    _____________

i am not always able to do phonetic transcriptions (evil), so those are sometimes missing.

here's a page with pronunciations of the IPA Consonants if you wanna figure out how those phonetic lines are pronounced. but. like. why. vowels are here. the backwords question mark things in superscript above some letters mean "make a villager noise while saying this."

    ok bye
