    It is used to stop people from "sniping" the item. Essentially allowing people to check the thread and see if someone tried to counter offer just before the end of the auction and get it instead. Kinda like at a real auction, where the announcer will count down from 5 to 1 before actually 'selling' the piece, so that people can try and continue bidding.
