    How to say....
    While the painting is really good, that doesn't quite give me a scary feeling as I suppose it was intended to ; the overly complicated design make it looks more a mystical aquatic kind of creature rather than a scary monster.
    My attention is driven to the left on the spirals tentacle things because of the contrast that you can find here.
    And the part the should look scary, the blind eyes even thought they are well seeable, doesn't quite get your attention for more than 1 second.
