Well as he stated, a chest would be a fine idea. Maybe a trapped chest with a hopper underneath, so if you click the wrong item in it wont go down...
or simply just attach an item filter to the chest to only allow boat passes, or maybe if you throw in the wrong item it spits out a hopper
