Better Storyline?? WynnExcavation or Realm of Light?

For once, I'm gonna have to give this to WynnExcavation.

EDIT: if we're ranking only story, and not the whole questline, then I'll actually go with Realm of Light.

 

WynnExcavation all the way, that plot twist was too good

 

Objectively? RoL is just more modern, it's better integrated in the world, has more variation and better writing, and has incredible recurring characters. Subjectively? ...WOMEN, AM I RIGHT?!?! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *reinserts Mountain Dew IV drip*

 

To be fair WynnEx has never been a pain to play, it might be outdated and not very impactful, but at least it is fast and lets me play the game.
The only reason I do Taproot and A Headless Story are because they are obligatory in order to unlock the RoL. Cutscenes are a pain and WynnEx has none therefore WynnEx wins.

 

The only thing ROL is missing is a mere explanation as to w h y lari is such a pacifist even when NO other elf seems to have the same pacifst moral she has, what made lari special and so pacifist, and especially what made her chosen by Orphion when someone capable like dullahan was right there, or the elder elfs. Despite this, its still a very good questline that although missing a why, explains a lot of gavels world and the impact lari has had on its whole history, and of course her attempts at trying to undo her lack of action with the parasite, and ultimately redeeming herself by satisfyingly beating the shit out of bak'al


Compare this to characterless stake-less Wynn Excavation, you never really feel like the opposing faction that is the gavel excavation is making any progress despite "getting the crystals", although they do seem threatening by chucking you into pits or dangerous situations, its undone by the fact WynnEx already has mining structures there, making the whole set pieces feel not so dangerous.

Although the theme of a powerful company seeping into wynns politics and manipulating their kings, scaring them into inaction is really interesting and involved with the province, it's less impactful than watching how the darkness is eating away at gavel because of lari's flaws (however, unexplained). We never really see the consequences that the excavations have, they are harmless to the province and the absolute most damage they would be doing, is damaging a desert tomb, without ever harming the resources on wynn.


However, it is kinda "nice" that we get a quest meant to display how capable we alone are in this world and being able to topple a whole company over, and defeating an all powerful cosmic amadel (however in my personal opinion the way the king of ragni just throws magic olmic crystals into lava is utterly stupid), i think it exagerates a bit just how strong we are, lorewise, a soldier of wynn could stop a massive "world ending" catastrophe and a diplomatic war with WynnEx simply by disposing of the CEO, all by ourselves.

Attempting to ignore just how outdated the WynnEx saga is and just looking at their stories, to me, ROL takes the whole bakery as to why its better over all, it explains the relationship between light and darkness in a way WynnEx couldn't ever hope to do.

 

WynnEx is outdated, and thus its connection with the rest of the world is lost. There's also a whole bunch of outdated stuff.
WynnEx D's dialogue about Light and Dark is nice though. It's a good place and good time to start explaining more about the influences

Judging Wynnex is like trying to judge 90 old person because you gonna feel like shit for doing it cause they dont have much time left on this Earth anyway

Judging ROL on its flaw is probably could be interesting discussion, if you do not stuck with people who for some reason keep pointing Lari being the only problem while ignoring other flaws that is and you just going to have the most uncivil conversation that make you feel more sane talking to a wall than partaking it

 

If cutscenes were skipable, I’m not sure what other major problems RoL would have then besides Lari’s character. Oh yeah and I guess Dullahan’s boss fight still not being in game yet, but the CT basically forgot about him.

But even with unskipable cutscenes, I’d still go with RoL.

in terms of the actual thread I think that ROL beats wynnex simply due to the how its structured, like wynnex COULD be better than ROL if it was reworked right, as the physical stuff with its age isnt the only issue it has. like we don't ever actually see wynnex like. do anything? Like part D is the only part that anything really happens in, and I think that part D is better than the early ROL parts but as a whole it doesnt stand up as well

 

Imagine if it turned out that wynnex was pulling strings with operatives and that is the cause of war in Fruma.... Sorry, actually no war there.

 

lari objectively sucks so wynnex for sure. I just hate her attitude and charachter and 2 and 3 are so so anoying

My personal problem with Lari is that the stakes were way too high, to the point she caused ceaseless death due to her pacifism without us ever getting an explanation as to WHY this is the case, if it was a minor thing it'd be passable as just a pacifist elf, but she is the reason for the decay and pretty much every single problem in Gavel.

If we got an explanation as to why she thought she had a better plan than Orphion pretty much every ROL problem would be solved, if we got an explanation like that then it would make sense for Orphion not to contact lari at all because he was furious at her, but as it stands its just, ugh, so close to being really really good, Although dullahan is forgotten gameplay-wise, you really feel the impact he has had too, especially on Lari, i want ROL to be good so bad

 

I agree with this for the most part. I would love the addition of an added Lari lore quest, it would be cool. Perhaps she could have lost her memory due to one thing or another, but the pacifism sticks with her. However, I think that if Lari snaps a bit sooner, that would also help it feel less obtrusive.

Lari lore: When she was a young elf, she accidentally squashed a ladybug and that event traumatized her for the rest of her life, and led to her pacifist tendencies.

there was a tragic event in her childhood, that was caused by a group of people who were just trying to do what they thought was right. She tried to stop them but couldnt. She learned that Death was unreversible and permanent, and decided that nobody can make that choice. Nobody can be confident enough that they are right, to do this. To do something, that can NEVER be undone.
