Does Alchemism get better?

I'm combat level 47 and similar levels in Alchemism, Farming, and Fishing, and it just doesn't seem like I can brew anything particularly useful? Many of the ingredients I have access to are already a nightmare to come by in non-miniscule quantities and most don't have helpful effects. The best I can really see is some moderate spell damage if I stacked 6 of the relevant ingredient. I'm hoping this is somewhat due to my low level, but does it get better at all? Leveling up professions is obviously a fair amount of effort and so far it really hasn't felt worth the time.

In short, professions are powerful and profitable if you are willing to put in the grind to get them high level. However, it is a serious grind. A lot of people, myself included, would tend to recommend not bothering with them for your first playthrough (or any other if you don't particularly like them; they're by no means necessary).
