I know an archer has a spell that shoots flaming arrows and as a side effect it really lights up a room and makes some of these really dark places easier to navigate. Is there any other way to do that besides being an archer?

I saw a forum thread that suggested, among other things, getting a torch, blaze powder or using soul points. I bought a torch but it doesn't seem to light up anything, no idea how blaze powder is supposed to help, and the soul points suggestion was just enigmatic.

Anyone know of other ways to light dark areas (and can express them in more than three words)?

Optifine has dynamic lighting which lets those three items illuminate the surroundings when held, they probably forgot that you need Optifine for that to work.

Which dark areas are you referring to?

Objects that would logically emit light create a light source around you with Optifine.

Yes, as others said, get optifine and turn dynamic lighting on.

I downloaded Optifine and I can see the difference now, just holding blaze powder. Thanks so much.

As for where... lots of places really. Wynnncraft has these great dungeons that they've obviously spent a lot of time on making just right, but they hit points where they're just a little too dark - especially when parkour is involved. The latest one I found really frustrating was the Craftsmas Chaos quest.

I'll have to try this out in a dungeon. Thanks.

You can also just use a fullbright mod.
