Alright folks, as of today it's officially been 10 years since I've joined the Wynncraft server for the first time (you can check my profile for proof) and as some kind of celebration for the server's anniversary, I wanted to share the story of how Grian came to owe me a full stack of emeralds for a full decade.

Now you probably have a lot of questions: Do you have proof of your claims? Why wait a whole 10 years to tell that story? Aren't you just bullshitting us? With the interest rate over 10 years, does that mean that Grian owes you the entire stock of emeralds available in Wynncraft?
To all that I can't give a definitive answer, as after such a long time the details are a bit fuzzy in my memory and if I took screenshots, they are buried in the hard drive of an old laptop that I can't currently access. That said, a friend recently reminded me that I had told him the story a few years back so I'm pretty confident in what I'm about to write.
Oh and for the waiting-so-long-before-asking-for-the-money, it's just that I couldn't be bothered.

Let's go back in time to before Wynncraft released, when CraftedMovie still had a dedicated server. Little young me, as a fan of their videos, started to join their server and had fun in the lobby playing the minigames, trying to find the secrets and beating the parkours all around the place. The number of players was already getting lower, as the staff was busy working on another at the time secret project that would become Wynncraft. Of course, as was everyone, I was hyped to learn more about what that project was and how to play it afterwards (I vividly remember some enigmatic images being posted on the forums to tease us about the name, and many people including me thought that it would be called Winecraft, ahem).
Then one day, as the CraftedMovie server was becoming emptier by the day, the news dropped: Wynncraft was to be a full MMORPG server in Minecraft. Of course, people were hyped, and even more when an Open Beta was announced after a Closed one. I couldn't let this pass up, and as a fervent Minecraft and CraftedMovie fan, I was eagerly waiting for the day I could connect and test Wynncraft.
At last, the fated day came, and as many other players, we all joined the server to finally discover what that was all about. Full of excitement, we rushed in the lobby portals to explore the province of Wynn and... find out that the servers weren't exactly working properly.
Well, that's par for the course, you can't expect a Beta to be 100% working from the first day, and I was certainly not surprised to see things failing. We were told to retry a few times, but nothing would do. We had to wait until the servers were fixed.

That's where Grian finally comes into play.
As we were all patiently waiting in the (at the time) tiny lobby, an idea emerged. What if a parkour was built to keep the players busy? And so, Grian and others (sorry I can't remember who else was there) went behind the lobby walls and prepared something. We waited until the stone bricks behind us were destroyed, revealing a narrow hallway filled with lava and a few blocks placed here and there to test our agility and coordination.
Of course, everyone threw themselves at the challenge, and as quickly as we jumped in there, we all promptly failed and fell in the lava one by one. The trial was not easy by any means, and it would require skill and patience to overcome it. Fittingly, we had time to try and fail over and over, making progress one jump at a time. Yet, none of us could complete the parkour.
While struggling to overcome this river of lava, Grian finally spoke up and said the following:
"The first one to complete the parkour will win a stack of emeralds"*
At those words, the eyes of all the participants in this fiery endeavour lit up with a green colour. It wasn't any longer a question of pride or ego. Now, we had to fight for an actual reward, a prize that would allow us to get a headstart when we would eventually be unleashed in the world of Wynncraft.
The whole of us redoubled their efforts, skill wasn't the only thing needed anymore, speed was part of the challenge as well. And so we ran, we jumped, we fell, we burnt, we respawned, we tried again. With each attempt, the goal came closer, but everyone else would approach it as well, and you had to be the one getting to it first. Keeping track of what was happening around was difficult, rushing ahead was the only thing to keep in mind, you couldn't take time to check your surroundings, pushing forward was all we could do, until...
Yes, the last block was finally under my blocky feet. No one was ahead of me. I had won the race.

    The 64 emeralds were mine.

That, unfortunately, is where my memory fails. I have a vague memory of having to leave the server and returning later to finally enter the province of Wynn, as the servers needed a few hours before becoming stable enough to handle the players. I went on to play Wynncraft for a full 10 years, albeit loosely as to this day, I only have an lvl 99 Mage to my name. I remember partying up for a session with Grian at the very beginning but maybe that's just my mind making this up. However, one thing in this story remains certain:

    I never got those emeralds.

And with that concludes my anecdote. Wynncraft holds a special place in my Minecraft experience and even in my life as I always come back to it eventually, even after not playing for multiple months or even years. I've had so much fun with friends in it over the years and I know the server and its community is always a place I'm happy to get back to. So thanks to the staff for creating it and working on it for so long, thanks to the community for keeping it a lively and pleasant place and to the next 10 years!

Now give me these goddamn emeralds, Grian.

*The exact words spoken were probably different

Editor's note: The Open Beta and the actual release might have been mixed up somewhere. It's been 10 years, okay?

Aside from the interest rate please remember to account for inflation. 64 emeralds aren't worth very much these days, although I have no idea how much value did they have back then. I have played only since 2020.

Technically speaking, because the server hadn't been played, that was 100% of the emeralds in circulation...

Technically speaking, if you've completed some of the quests he's helped work on you, you should've gotten your money back in a roundabout way.

As someone who remembers making far less than a stack pre-Mob update, mid 2014, I can assure 64 emeralds today would be like half a stack of EBs today probably. Maybe more. I don't know, there weren't many ways of grinding emeralds back then and there was like a 10th of the quests there are today so you definitely could make very little money. Oh and you also had only one playthrough per class so quests had a hard cap.

Grian owes a lot more than just 64 emeralds.

unfortunately, Grian did not include the phrase "adjusted for inflation", to my knowledge, in his promise of 32 em
