How do you deal with the Grootslang boss' hole attack?

It seems to spawn a persistant hole instantly at a random location, and at least according to the wiki, it instantly kills you. It doesn't seem to have any telegraph and i've died a couple times now from it spawning directly under me and getting one shot. Is there some sort of telegraph or safe spot i'm missing?

 

There is a telegraph. Before a hole spawns, there will be dirt particles where it's going to spawn.
