after he defeated bak'al he learned of the greater threat (dern) and set out to stop it. it is unknown what happened to him or if he's even dead.

After going on a research bender across Gavel - angering at least one librarian - he broke into the SE via Gateway Island as part of a plan to seal away the Dern Beast using his own life force. This is as far as we canonically know regarding Bob's fate, and anything past him entering the Expanse is the domain of vigorous debate.

(actually, whether he entered the SE at all or just went straight to Dern is still a bit of a ~ m y s t e r y ~, but the presence of the Eye and the Player+Relend being teleported to the Outlook with the lights turned off for dramatic effect really heavily implies that it's SE).

Bob is probably dead. Many think that the seal he gave his life to place is the one on Eldritch Outlook. Yet others think that the Eye instantly vibe-checked him at the gate, found Bob wanting, and threw him into Dernic Hypergaol.

For a long while, I thought that his seal was successful, and that it was whatever's keeping the portal deactivated, but nowadays I lean more towards the idea that whatever seal he placed was on the Dern Beast itself. In that case we won't discover its exact nature until we go there ourselves.

Supplementary data (TNA, Voidlore, maybe AHC) very lightly implies that Dern isn't doing very hot right now, which I think supports the idea that Bob did something incredibly traumatic to the Dern Beast on his way out.
