SPOILER Theory: Do the Silent Expanse Skelebros represent time and space?

I made a shitpost theory a few weeks ago that the new boss in the new raid is related to the Dern Portal guard who is known only as "Black Sans" and sometimes "???". Though that theory was a shitpost, I did take note that they both appear to be legless floating skeletons and have considered them to be the same species. Now, we have some additional information thanks to the dev livestream:



This seems to imply that the new boss, who we will call Black Gregpyrus to avoid dispute on his name, is responsible for the void holes seen across the silent expanse. This opens up an interesting connection to black sans. Black sans shows you alternate timelines in which you are a villain or things go differently in the past, while Black Gregpyrus opens up portals to alternate.. spaces?. Note that one has connections to space and the other has connections to time. This raises some interesting questions.

• Are these just coincidences or are they intentional?
• Are they related?
• Are they the only 2 members of their species?

There are a few differences, such as that Black Gregpyrus has arms, white eyes, and a blue gem in his chest. This could be because of the limitations of the game though. Obviously black sans would not be able to have the gem or arms, though he could have the eyes. His eyes being different can be explained as some representation of their abilities though.

There isn't much to speculate on just yet so more information will likely reveal itself when the hero beta comes out.

 

Epic gamer theory: ???'s actual name is Black Sans, and Greg's name is actually Black Papyrus. Why? Well, oculism does not like that name, but now it is obvious that it is actually an advanced technique called lying and that he was actually happy we found out the secret.

Jokes aside, now that you mention how they both look similar, and how the wiki describes it as a metaphysical entity that causes tears between space (was probably in the livestream, but I had to leave as they were wrapping it up), I'd say now it's too much of a coincidence that there is a good chance it is actually intentional.

I also added the definition of Metaphysical after this, as it could imply one of two things:
- all experience of the raid boss is just outside of the limitations of human experience. We cannot smell, taste, touch, see, or perceive it in any way (however, this brings up the question of how the fuck do we fight it and how are we seeing the glorious 3d model in game)
- It's not a literal creature or it's appearance and the fight is not literal. It could be that TNA as a whole or just the raid boss is like a creative expression of the inexpressible.

It could also be neither of those :)

A thing I'd like to point out: in the discovery lore, it says "unknown to all but a few." If this is some metaphysical entity in a recluse gap in reality, shouldn't the number of people who know about it be zero?

Well, zero, unless my man has interpersonal relationships. Not just one, but a few; so maybe there exists an entire black skeleton family. Maybe Black Sans and Black Papyrus are siblings, or maybe they could even be lovers with children of their own. Who knows?

 

Theory: what if Grennis is the beast that forced the Olms to evacuate?

It might sound a bit weird, but Grennis an entity of Dern, and the one responsible for all the Void Holes. Void Holes are essentially wormholes in reality, so Grennis could manipulate Void Holes for combat purposes, like summoning fireballs. Not to mention the beast that made the Olm evacuate their city was clearly very strong, and while mob strength to players probably doesn't have much canon interpretation, Grennis is the boss of the Nameless Anomaly, probably at equal footing or even stronger than the Eye. No part of the Fate of the Olm discovery has you go into Void Valley, the furthest you go is the Toxic Wastes, and Anya's Penumbra is located in the Ruined Olmic City, close to the Silent Road, the beginning of the Silent Expanse. Granted, an easy counter to the prior is that the Nameless Anomaly raid is located at the end of the Toxic Wastes and the beginning of Void Valley, but there are no Void Holes in the Toxic Wastes, and while there is a Void-like occurance in the Eyeball Forest, it is not through a Void Hole.

Also it has now been confirmed by oculism. The true name of the Nameless Anomaly boss is Black Grennyris.

I think the beings that know about it are other dernic entities or entities that serve dern, mainly the Dern Beast, the Eye (probably), and Bak'al (maybe).

How do you know that my guy serves Dern? My man's just chilling in the Silent Expanse, and you dare to accuse him of these crimes?

 

It’s my personal headcanon that Grennyris entered the Silent Expanse from Dern, (whether intentional or not) and just happened to stay in the Expanse. Beings like the Dern Beast most likely know about Grennyris but allow it to stay there as an extra obstacle for whoever comes across it.
