Old Man Martyn is an Olm and is the reason that Bob learned about the War Of The Realms.

Now I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out.

So, in the quest Tempo Town Trouble, we meet Martyn after we beat the first Time Trouble. As we get to know, Martyn has been keeping an eye on the Time Troubles for some time now. But this begs a question; how does Martyn know about the Time Troubles? No one in the world aside from him knows about these things. And here's another question; how is it that a old man can beat up a creature trapped within time again and again? Well, they give you this answer after you beat the Time Trouble, as Martyn teleports you to some unknown void. What is this void, you ask? Well, it's very simple. This is the same void we later see in Deja Vu, except this time Asher's house is there. This is the void between time and space itself. But it gets deeper. In that same quest, he teleports you to Past Time Valley, and then when we save Asher, we get taken back to the present by Martyn. Before he does that, Asher asks him where he got these powers, and if he was really human. He just responds by saying he's read a book or two in his time. He also says that time travel is tempting, but it is also really dangerous. We get teleported back to the present, Martyn leaves, and Asher says something about Martyn knowing Bob. But you could just dismiss all this as, "Maybe he was just born in Time Valley or something." Well, you are probably right, but also totally wrong. Back in Tempo Town Trouble, we see Martyn mention the Olm. How would he know about the Olm? Sure, people outside of him know, but most of them don't even know what the Olm are called. Now, finally, we are on the final damning piece of evidence.
Martyn's skin color.
At this point you might just say that I'm chronically insane, but hear me out again. Martyn's skin color is yellow, similar to something of that in the Simpsons. No one outside of him has that skin color, ever. It's like he just painted himself yellow, which is what I think might have happened.
Couple this with the rest of the evidence I've displayed, and you've got something good here.
Let me explain. Because Martyn knows about the Time Troubles, the Olm, and says that time travel is bad, it's likely when the Silent Expanse was overrun by darkness, Martyn ran to Time Valley in hopes of traveling back in time to stop the threat. He did time travel, but it affected him forever. He traveled into the future instead of the past due to the unstable energy, turning him old enough to not be able to kill anything, but giving him a fuck ton of time magic, allowing him to kill the Time Troubles and do shit with time, so he realized that he could time travel. For his yellow skin color, I will just say that old Olm have yellow skin or something. He almost went back in time, but knowing that he would fuck up the timeline if doing so, decided not to. In the end, he waited for thousands of years for someone who could hopefully beat back the darkness, accumulating massive amounts of knowledge, and when Bob arrived, he thought that Bob was the person who could do this task. So he tracked down Bob to Death Island, telling him of Gateway Island and what was on it, and then teleporting Bob to the island, where Bob wrote his letters, and then gave Martyn the letters, which were later passed onto Nilfrem. After this, Bob set off into the Realm of Dern, and Martyn went back to Time Valley, keeping watch on the Time Troubles until the present day.
TLDR: Martyn is time-affected Olm who told Bob about the War of the Realms

Cool theory, but pretty sure olm have grey skin, seen in SE discoveries.

On-topic though: yeah he's probably an Olm, and he probably knew Bob. How well is a different question. Unless the rules for time travel in Wynncraft's universe are well established at some point, it's difficult to assume more about him and his life.
