I think my quest broke

Me and my friend were doing the Redbeard's Booty quest and every time I completed one of the islands and hit a button it would do the digging animation but never give a map piece. My friend had no problems getting the map pieces but they refused to drop for me. I tried changing worlds, using /kill and re-entering the quest area, and restarting Minecraft but none of my attempts worked. Is my quest broken or am I just doing something wrong, and also are there any fixes if it is broken?
