I wanted to start this off by saying, I love this.
This event is easily the best one in Wynncraft history.
It has flaws, notably only one minigame, which is more a fun fetch quest, and I think it is an issue that crates are still gained through daily and weekly objects as they block out lower-level players. (I think the best solution to this is to have beating the mini-games gift you one crate daily.)
This Event even adds a new dialog system and expands the lore, it's great.

Just one issue, what happens when we run out of space in the texture pack?
This is something that's been in the back of my mind for a while now.
There's a point in time in which the texture pack simply becomes too large for people to realistically download it, and I'm wondering when that point is, and what do you do about it?
I know one thing they can do is new effects and pets, those don't require space, but in terms of new cosmetics when's the end?

Anyways, I love the event, just something I'm legitimately worried about.
    Happy Hollowynn ~

This might be a cheap answer, but I'm willing to bet that it'll be a long time before the texture back becomes too big, and if it ever does, Minecraft might change how textures and stuff work to make it smaller, who knows.

I personally feel as though future festivals won't have as many new cosmetics compared. My personal theory is that they'll do reruns of festivals each year so people who just started playing that year can get the old cosmetics, but there will be a few new cosmetics sprinkled in.

I feel like it's more likely to be a few old cosmetics sprinkled in, to make them feel more special.
That being said, I agree but also keep in mind Wynncraft is ever-expanding in both mechanics and other things, we need space for those aswell!
I'm really just curious when the point is tbh.

I get the concern, however I wouldn't worry too much about the pack; the way the new models are being made is far more space-conserving than the older methods of making models, and if need be I can optimize the pack further (Here's a thread about how to do it, I haven't gotten around to doing it yet because it's a bit of a hassle, makes files harder to edit and there isn't a need yet, however if it does become a problem we can definitely cut a lot of fluff out with it) https://forums.wynncraft.com/threads/optimization-and-additions-to-the-resourcepack.295210/))

I estimate we've got a good solid 8 years of festivals worth of space at least, and I'll probably not be making the models at that point so it's not my problem

Also great to hear you like the format of this festival, I hope we can learn from it and just make better festivals every time they roll around.

Can't they just delete the old, unused assets and keep the cosmetics?

First of all, the limit for texture pack size is absolutely gigantic. Wynn isn't anywhere close to it. There becomes a point where the texture atlas starts to break, but you need extra cells walrus sized files (2.5 MB texture) to reach that.

Second of all, there really aren't that many performance issues that should be associated with the resource pack.

The resource pack is currently very large because of the style of model used previously has an unbelievably large number of cubes. Models are just a JSON text file. The new ones are mostly around 20-40 KB. Hardly anything. The textures are also really small now that they use blockbench. They're like 32x32, and they only take like 1-2 KB. These can also be optimized further, as there's some somewhat useless info in these models making them more readable.

The old models on the other hand, like frost and yahya hat can take up 500-1000 KB each. If these were to be redone to fit the newer style then the pack would be able to hold many more cosmetics and other models.

I do feel though like pets have a limit, since at some point there simply will be too many of them.

    Hey!

Just to touch on a couple things said in the thread that it is perfectly safe to add new stuff to the resource pack, it'll be easily 10-20+ years before it reaches the limit of 50MB (100MB on 1.15+). There are even some neat ways in order to compress and optimize the resource pack even further that I've been experimenting with which can reduce the pack size by more than 50%, pretty amazing if you ask me!

This is done by removing whitespace in model files, optimizing textures, removing unneeded metadata and even cleaning up sound files. It will definitely help with things such as load times and client performance for players as I know some people run into issues loading the resource pack upon joining the server.

The main issue is loading the resource pack on login.
But also thank you guys for the information!
This was something I was worried about in the back of my mind.

You can put different models on same item using CustomModelData

For example you sometimes see mobs wearing granites as helmet, briefly before turning into various custom models.
