What do the 5 elements do?

What do they do, what are the powders, how are they useful, what's the point?

 

um..., well ima bump this

 

Different mobs are weak or have defense to different elemental damages (different elements do more or less damage to them).
Also don't bump so frequently.

 

They mostly correlate with skill points and kinds of armor/weapons.

Earth (strength): extra damage, slower weapons, poison, quite high health armor
Thunder (dexterity): chance for double damage, faster weapons, good DPS identifications on armor, lower health armor
Water (intelligence): Reduced mana cost, mana regen, spell damage, average health armor
Fire (defense): Take less damage, slower weapons, higher health, lower DPS, high health armor
Air (agility): chance to take no damage, faster weapons, higher walk speed, lower health armor
^ the above is a huge simplification ofcourse.

Also like Mardeknius said, some mobs are weak or resistant to certain elements, by how much this effects your DPS differs per mob but it's useful to know that weapons with faster attack speeds are more effected by both weaknesses and resistances. If a mob is weak or resistant that means it either takes more or less damage from that element when you deal damage to it from that element.
