The CSS Neptune crashed through the cascading waves stylishly, sheets of water droplets speeding past the stern of the ship, mist spraying everywhere (haha get it?). The sky was thick with fog, weighed down by a heavy, gray, blanket. Gray was not the spirits of the crew, however. Efena stood proud, leaning against the railing. The president's hair trailed behind her like the tail of a comet.

"Enjoying the view?" Mei quipped. But Efena paid her no mind, for she had other things to think about.

Two weeks earlier, the Corkian council had set off together on a journey to the Eastern Mountains. None knew much about them, not the Corkians, not the adventurers from the lands to the south they called Wynn, and not even the Avos tribes that had resided in the cliffs of Corkus for so many thousands of years; all everyone knew was that the mountains, since the beginning of recorded history, had been seen growing more distant, until today one could not see even the peaks of the Eastern Mountains, that had once been right beside the Fruman peninsula. This voyage would change that.

Atop the mast of the ship sat Ava, the strange Avos who had dared tinker in the art of electromagic. The council had accepted her among their ranks, for her talent was unmatched, and despite her feathers, there was no way the world could simply let go such a source of innovation.

A shape emerged from the left. The clattering of pebbles was heard by the crew. "Just a rock being battered by the water," Ava said as a small, jagged stone spire passed by. They would have stopped, but to stay among the sharp teeth would most surely damage the hull of the ship. Not that they were sure anything was past the rocks in the first place. From behind, a splash different from the usual crashing of waves was heard, but the ship continued on.

    ...

    "Nodise is missing."

Sybil's voice was quick and tense. Efena glanced across the table. Of the eleven council members, only ten were present.

"Perhaps she's off in her private quarters. There's no need to be concerned." Carl waved his hand. And so the crew exited the meeting chamber, leaving only Clomius, Efena, and a shaking Sybil.

The next morning, Maxie awoke to a start. Ava peered down from the top of the bunk, looking at her confused roommate. A loud banging came from the door.

"Ava. Maxie. Have you seen Sybil?"

Maxie's eyes widened. "Is she missing too? And what does Efena have to say of this?"

Dwice pushed open the door. "We found her body at the doorway to the meeting room."

Grant and Mei stood at the head of the table. As Ava and a Maxie still shaking off sleep made their way to their seats, Grant looked around and said, "There is an impostor among us."

All were startled. Council members began to chatter, their voices nervous. "Quiet!" Mei shouted. Everyone looked back towards the end of the table where Mei stood. "If we are to find out who is attempting to sabotage our mission and murder our council members, we must be calm and methodical." Murmurs of agreement filled the room. "Now. Clomius, you were in the room with Efena and Sybil. Do you have anything to say?"

Clomius shook and sobbed. "I don't know what happened. I don't know. I didn't do anything, I swear. I would never kill Efena." The other crewmates eyed him. "After the meeting ended, I went to the navigation room to make sure the ship was on the right course. It became dark, and I went around and turned off the lights. I never bothered to go back to the meeting room, because I thought Sybil and Efena already took care of that room."

"He's kind of suspicious," said Tasha as she watched tears fall from Clomius' eyes that were a shade of red that signaled the most primal of fear. "We should throw him overboard."

    "We can't take any chances."

The room once again was full of agreement.

Grant and Tasha pushed him out of the room. Clomius was too shaken by fear and nervousness to resist. "I'm not the impostor," he managed to say as he gasped for air between ragged sobs.

    ...

"Stay calm, Maxie. We need to stay calm, like Mei said. Calm." Maxie paced around the room, so quickly he might have been mistaken for a tiny hurricane. Ava tried to step in and stop Maxie from continuing to spin, but there was no stopping his frantic circling.

    Suddenly, the electromagical lights flickered.

"I'm heading to electrical. You stay here, Ava."

    ...

Two hours had passed. The power had not returned. Ava, becoming worried for Maxie, stumbled towards electrical in the dark like a blind man.

The tang of blood filled the room. The room span around Ava. "Maxie..." Climbing the ladder to the deck to get fresh air, Ava truly began to realize how grave the situation was. Her feathers puffed up, and they rubbed against her clothes uncomfortably, even though they had been specially tailored to suit an Avos form.

She retched over the side of the Neptune. Ava looked at the sky, gray as ever, then around the deck.

Clomius. Tasha. Grant. Their faces still frozen in expressions of horror, their bodies lay against the control panel of the room that controlled the navigation systems of the ship, sparks flying from circuitry in the walls. The three had clearly put up a fight against whoever came to kill them, but alas, they had been overpowered.

Ava began to sob uncontrollably, just as Clomius had the day before. As she cried, for her lost friend and her life, footsteps resounded from behind her. Ava froze. Turning around slowly, she came to face the mysterious figure, but the fog concealed their identity, only revealing their stance and the knife that they held in their left hand. Their right arm hung crooked by their side, likely broken when Clomius, Tasha, and Grant had attempted to prevent the murderer from bringing their fates upon them.

Ava gathered herself, and began to run towards the ladder. She didn't know where she was headed, but she had to escape the impostor. The mist had made the deck slippery and dampened her feathers so she could not take off or sustain flight.

By the ladders was Carl, crumpled on the floor. Ava continued to run, sliding and trying to grip the boards of the deck with her talons. She made it down the ladder and shut the hatch, locking it and preventing the impostor from following her. The murderer pounded on the metal plating with their fists, but the metal did not give.

    "Ava?"

Mei was huddled in a corner. She looked at Ava, then pointed to another form in the opposite corner. "Killed. Right in front of me. The murderer didn't notice me, and left the room."

Ava began to think. What to do, what to do? All hope seemed to be lost.

Then it clicked. The power armor she had donned the day of her first audience with the council. She had brought it aboard, and it had been kept in the storage room until now.

Ava began to traverse the corridors, moving towards the storage room, as a piercing shriek filled the halls. It was that of Mei. Then, it was cut short. Ava froze for a second, then continued to move as her heartbeat quickened.

Finally, she made it to the racks of supplies, and the ever gleaming power armor. Ava grasped at the suit, but just as she took the visor from its stand, the door of the storage room slammed shut.

"It's just us two now, bird. Quiet, isn't it? Dark, peaceful. So serene," the impostor started.

Ava threw the visor at the figure. The knife clattered against the metal tiles of the chamber. The Avo threw herself at her attacker, and they fell to the ground. She scratched at the impostor and pushed a shelf over them, but they stood up again and began to laugh.

The air was knocked out of her lungs as she was thrown against the wall by the impostor. Ava grabbed hold onto a glove of the power suit and slid it over her wing. She swung her fist towards her opponent with all her might, and the impostor was knocked backwards.

"You won't kill me," spat Ava. But, as she rose to finish them off, her foot slipped on the objects scattered on the floor.

The impostor rose and picked up the knife once again. Dazed by her fall, Ava's attempts to roll away were unsuccessful as her strength failed her.

Her eyes widened. The blade traveled straight and true, and Ava, struck in the side, collapsed for the last time.

"No," she said as her life drained away from her body. "No..."

The knife descended a second time, and thus Ava, inventor, of many tricks, was brought to an end.
