The Realm Of Dern - 1004 AP

“My lord, there has been… a development in our endeavor in Gavel, that you must know about.”

Bak’al stood in the center of the temple, eyes closed, listening to the whispers of the darkness. His eyes snapped open from his meditation by the sudden interruption, and the fires in the room grew significantly hotter, pyres of flame stretching towards the open midnight sky.

The messenger slowly backed away from the sudden heat, afraid that they had enraged Bak’al. Fortunately, he seemed to be in a good mood, and only conjured his blade into his hand as he turned around. That was as least a step of from their last interaction, which had ended in the messenger earning a scar that stretched diagonally across their face. They remembered the last messenger who had brought bad news to Bak’al, and, well… it was not a pretty sight, to say the least.

“Go on then. Tell me. What is this development you speak of.”

The messenger gulped, restraining the urge to just run away as fast as possible to escape the wrath that was soon to follow. But a far worse punishment was awaiting if they failed to deliver the message.

“If it’s about that elf bitch Lari again, I swear to the darkness…”

    “Well, my lord, it actually-“

“WHAT IS IT THIS TIME?” Bak’al roared, sending the fires of the temple nearly into a blazing inferno. The fireball in his hand transformed into a white-hot blade made of pure fire, and although the messenger couldn’t see it, he was sure that Bak’al’s eyes had turned into the same white-hot Inferno that he was summoning.

“SHE HAS BEEN INTERFERING FOR FAR TOO LONG. IF I FIND OUT YOU HAVE FAILED TO BRING HER DOWN AGAIN, I SWEAR THAT I WILL SPILL THE BLOOD OF BOTH LIGHT AND DARK.”

The messenger was shaking with nervousness by this point, barely even able to speak. Trembling from the raging fires, they barely managed to sputter out the news.

“My l-lord, Lari a-and the Fruman hero have made it into the Realm of Light, d-despite our b-best efforts. T-they are attempting to f-free the obelisks and d-destroy the p-parasite we sent.”

The messenger closed their eyes, waiting for retribution, but there was none. Maybe they would be able to leave unharmed this time. They carefully turned to leave, their mission finished, when a white-hot blade pierced through their chest. The messenger sunk to their knees, gasping in pain, and felt Bak’al rip his mythical blade free of their chest. The last of their life was a fleeting breath, before they collapsed to the ground, their soul forever torn from this world.

“Peon.” Bak’al scoffed, sheathing Inferno and calming the flames in the temple. “If the forces of darkness cannot defeat the light, then maybe it’s time that I went there myself.”

The Realm Of Light - 1004 AP

“Finally, we’ve reached it! The Nexus of Light! Orphion should be right in here!” Lari gazed up at the massive grandeur of Orphion’s Nexus, which almost appeared to be a palace suspended in the clouds.

The warrior standing next to her drew nocked an arrow to his bow, and began to stride forward towards the massive door. “We have no time to waste, we have to get inside and save Orphion from the-“

A massive explosion threw the adventurer aside against a large rock, knocking him out as a black portal appeared right in front of the door, in the shape of a large eye. Lari raised her hands to shield herself from the blast, the explosion, shoving her backwards. “I’m afraid I’m not going to let you do that, hero.”

Lari recognized that voice, even though she had never seen who had said it. She had never really been involved in the business from Wynn, but she had read the stories, and she knew who it was. “Bak’al!” She exclaimed, throwing down her hands and conjuring two orbs of light in them. “Leave this place! You are not allowed here!”

Bak’al scoffed. “Have you seen the state your realm is in? There is more than enough darkness here to give me all the power I need. I’m sure you know better than most how devastated this place is.”

“Get out of here, you freak of corruption! You don’t deserve a place in any of the realms!”

Bak’al clutched his chest in mock sadness. “A freak? I thought you were better than that, Lari.” He pretended to wipe a tear from his eye.

Lari was taken aback by this sudden display from Bak’al. Was he really such a monster, or… She closed her eyes and shook her head, wiping away those thoughts. She looked back at the portal, preparing an attack, but Bak’al was gone. The lights in her hands dimmed momentarily, and Bak’al chose that moment to attack.

Lari was launched forward by the surprise blow on her back, and barely managed to spin around in time to summon a shield against Bak’al’s sword. She pressed the shield upwards as hard as she could manage, opposing elements battling, before swiftly dropping the shield and rolling out of the way.

Quickly getting up, she fired several beams of light at her opponent, but Bak’al nimbly dodged them all and returned with his own counterattack. An inky pool of blackness appeared below Lari’s feet, pulling her in, and she strained to free herself. Finally, she conjured a pair of white wings on her back, which she used to help pull herself out of the darkness.

She soared around the island, gathering power from the light, and created a prison of pure light, which she enclosed around Bak’al, forcing him still. She landed next to his immobile form, breathing heavily from the magic she was casting. “I’m going to make this the end of your days, Bak’al.”

Lari summoned a massive glowing greatsword in the sky above Bak’al, which picked up speed as it fell and threatened to cleave Bak’al directly in two. He looked up at the sky, almost casually, and said dryly, “A sword? Is that really all you could think of? That’s a really overused death method, in my opinion. I prefer to use a much more efficient method.”

Lari grew even more furious at Bak’al’s taunting. He dares to insult the power of the Light! Just as the sword was about to drop, Bak’al simply raised a hand up in the air, summoning a dark shield above him and somehow ignoring the prison Lari had placed around him. The sword clattered uselessly against the shield before dissipating into the air.

This enraged Lari even further as Bak’al extended a pair of pitch-black wings and soared into the air. Determined to chase him down, Lari pushed into the skies and flew after him herself. Lari chased after him over the whole island, as they soared through arches and pathways. Lari could’ve sworn she saw an erratic grin cross Bak’al’s face as they flew.

She flew faster and faster, but was never quite able to catch up with him. Finally, they flew back to the portal, but instead of stopping, Bak’al just soared right through the window of darkness. Oh, no you don’t, Bak’al. You’re not getting away from me! Increasing her speed, Lari sped through the portal right behind the corrupted, prepared to eradicate the darkness, right from its source.

The portal closed right behind her, meaning this was now or never.

Forces will fight, light and dark clashing in an eternal war that means nothing. They fight only because they are opposites, bringing their war to every other realm, desperate to achieve their victory. Even if they did, it would only be in illusion. Light and dark are meant to forever battle, and even if the light is consumed, or the darkness blinded, both forces will still live on.

I can see it all. Every movement, every exchange of power. Every time light seems to emerge victorious, the darkness returns. Even when the darkness finally appears to consume everything, the light lives on. In the end, the war is inconsequential. Maybe they will learn that someday.

But as I watched, I saw not one new force, emerge, but two. Small pinpricks of power in an ocean of color, but they seemed to be the potential to end this age-old war. Looking on, I admired the balance of it all. Light within darkness, darkness within light. What beautiful synergy.

Path To Darkness - 1004 AP

It didn’t take long to see Lari fly out of the portal, anger clearly evident on her face, seeking to wipe Bak’al off the face of the world. Quickly, he closed the portal behind her, and dodged out of the way of her rage-induced attack. “I’m going to make you pay, Bak’al!”

She closed in to make another attack, but took notice of her surroundings and stopped. “Wait… this isn’t Dern. What is this place? Why did you bring me here? Are you to afraid to return to Dern?” She shouted, her momentarily cooled anger resurging in an instant.

“Stop,” Bak’al said, standing calmly on the small island where they both now stood. “I have a proposition for you.”

“A proposition?!” Lari growled, breathing heavily and angrily. Her hair was in tatters at this point, covering her face halfway. She pulled it away from her face before continuing, trying to stand defiantly against Bak’al. “I’ll never join with you filth, or accept any proposition you make.” She managed to spit on the ground in front of Bak’al, who didn’t even bat an eye. “I would rather die than stand side by side with the darkness!”

“Who said I was working with the darkness?”

“Don’t try and trick me, you corrupted monster. I’ve seen you fight alongside the darkness. Everything you’ve ever done is to further the cause of the beast! Don’t you dare try and tell me you’re not!”

“I don’t have to, Lari. You said it yourself. I’m not a part of the darkness. I am corruption, as you call it. Everything I have ever done is to take this world and mold it into something perfect, a vision of the Nether expanding and influencing all realms.”

Lari scoffed. “Even still, I will not align with you. I am light, you are darkness. You want to destroy the world, I want to save it. That’s all there is to it. Even if I die, then Orphion’s chosen will still save the light!”

Bak’al began to laugh, leaving Lari bewildered. He was in a position of life and death, and he laughs? He was just trying to trick her again. He was faking emotion, trying to twist her to his needs, wasn’t he?

“You have no idea just how wrong you are, Lari. You try to see the world from a perspective of good and evil, and that peace is somehow the answer to everything. I’m not going to beat around the bush about this Lari; everything you know is wrong.

“I am the purest expression of corruption there is in this world. Light is what made me, Lari. Not just darkness. And in you, too, there is both light and dark. I sense a seed of darkness in your heart, and I have not meddled a thing with it. You have brought darkness into your own heart, Lari. Tell me, what is it that is causing your darkness? The essence of darkness is desire, to want something, to be something you never were before. So, I ask, Lari, what do you really want?”

Lari stopped, and Bak’al could see something turning in her mind. She seemed lost in thought for a moment, trying to piece together the puzzle forming in her head. Her anger dissipated, and she looked back at Bak’al, a bit renewed and changed, he could tell. “I still don’t trust you, Bak’al, but… I’m willing to hear more, for now.”

It wasn’t much, but progress was progress. Bak’al took a deep breath, mentally preparing himself. He hadn’t expected to get this far, but he needed to be ready for the final reveal. “I can tell what you want, Lari. You want to be respected. You want to finally be seen and known by the world. And more than that, you want peace. You want a perfect world with no more darkness or opposition. And I can see that just a little part of you wants to lead this perfect world, doesn’t it?

“Which is why I offer you this proposition. I have a similar dream, a goal to convert the world into my own utopia. If we joined forces, I am sure we would have the power to make these dreams a reality. We could destroy both light and dark, and rebuild the world the way we want. We can lead this perfect world, but it can only happen if we align together.”

He extended a hand towards her, wishing to make an agreement, but Lari still wasn’t convinced. “How can I be sure that this isn’t just some trick? That you’re not twisting my feelings to make things go your way?”

“Lari, I-, well, I suppose its really time to tell you. I’ve been trying to hide this, disguise under my anger and fool myself into believing that it wasn’t real. It may seem odd for such, a monster that you see me as to have these sorts of feelings, but…”

Bak’al hoped she would understand. Her gaze softened a little, and she gazed out into the expanse, deep in thought, in conflict with herself. Her mind was wrestling with everything she had been told, and Bak’al didn’t blame her. “Do- do you really feel that way?”

He took a deep breath, closing his eyes, and tilting his head downward, trying to work up his nerve and find the words. “Y-yes, I do. I’ve never felt anything more real in my life.”

There was a moment of silence and Lari took in what he said. Bak’al began to worry. What if she doesn’t accept? What will happen then? Fortunately, he didn’t have to find the answer.

Bak’al felt a warm feeling in his still outstretched arm, and looked up to see Lari’s hand placed inside his. “I’m done hiding as well, Bak’al. It’s time to accept who I really am.” She smiled radiantly at him, and Bak’al smiled back, enclosing him hand around hers. He pulled her close into an embrace, his dark and her light finally meeting in harmony. Now, there was only one thing left to do.

As silently as possible, Bak’al took the knife he had kept hidden and pulled it into his hand. Slowly, he rotated the knife until it was pointing directly as Lari’s back. His hand shaking, he pulled his hand out, clutching the knife as tight as possible… and let go.

The blade clattered onto the rock, clanging loudly. “I- I can’t do this. I just can’t. Why is it all so real?” Bak’al’s voice was racked with sobs for the first time in a thousand years. For the first time, he was truly experiencing an emotion he had never even thought about, even before his change.

“Everything I said… it really was true. Why? Why do I really feel like this?”

“Because it’s love, Bak’al.” The corrupted looked up in shock to see Lari holding the dagger he had taken, just in time to see her throw it into the void to be lost forever. She didn’t even care about his attempted betrayal, and simple gazed at him with caring eyes.

“All this… it was supposed to be a trick. It really was. But now…”

“Don’t worry, Bak’al,” Lari said as she walked up to him. “I love you, and nothing else will ever change that.” She stood right in front of him, and Bak’al knew her change was real, too. “I-I love you too,” he said.

“Then it’s time we did what we said we would start. There’s only one thing left to do, Bak’al. Spark the embers.”
