Hello, welcome to your local lore and wiki Ted Talk.

This time, this is going to be about not just the Olm, but also WynnExcavation and Crystal lore as well.

Italicized - Key thing to a subject
(link) - Source (Linked to the Wynncraft Wiki)
While most of the history of the Olm has some speculation, as to where they came from, one thing is for certain - they were the original intelligent species in Wynn.

What I mean by this is that before the Humans migrated to Wynn from Fruma, the Olm were the original inhabitants of the area. However, where they came from is a question that is hard to answer. The most common theory is that they came from the Nether/Realm of War, or could have been native to Wynn (and by an extension, the Silent Expanse), and I support that theory.

However, during their time in Wynn, they made notable constructions, mainly Time Valley, the Ruined Olmic City, the Ancient City, and maybe even the Eldritch Outlook and The Great Bridge.

The first of these main ruins I will address would be the Ruined Olmic City (And by an extension the Olmic ruins throughout the SE). This is currently what I consider to be the greatest Ruin left by the Olm throughout the entire map. It has many structures that are infused with the Olm’s magic, such as a grand and imposing cathedral hosting a Tol Altar (The Olmic Rune), and an observatory that saw an impending doom that was going to come to the Ruined Olmic City (The Final Moments).

However, one thing to note is that Froner, one of the Olm featured in the discovery, says that more meteors are hitting the Silent Expanse’s border, but more significantly, the other Olm in the discovery says there were fireballs coming towards the city. In the lore of The Final Moments, it also states that a beast from an unknown realm laid siege to the city, and an oracle, possibly even the Archpriest of the Olm at the time, Anya, foresaw their doom, and created a bracelet that would hold off the beast. However, her descendants were unable to retrieve it, causing the city to be abandoned (Fate of the Olm). While this ‘beast’ at first might seem like Bak’al, look at the timeline. While this event has no set-in-stone date of when it happened, it almost certainly before 0 AP, when Bak’al became Corrupted, and his mind twisted to serving the Dern Beast. So, it could have been one of the Dern Beast’s ‘watchers’, as I like to call them, that was overlooking the SE. Of course, we know 2 of them, the Parasite, and Bak’al, but there could have possibly been a third one overlooking the SE, and it is not the Eye either, since the Eye was created after 0 AP, as seen in the Ultimate Discovery, Silent Expanse’s Secret. However, it also says ‘Unknown Realm,’ which as I stated in Part 1, could have come from an ‘in-between’ realm, although what caused the abandoning of the city remains unknown.

Another possible ruin could have been the Eldritch Outlook. If it was created by the Olm, then it puts most of, if not the rest of their creations to shame. It is the tallest structure in the entire world of Wynncraft, and currently, the Eye sits atop it. And unlike the other structures in Wynncraft, space becomes distorted as you enter it. It has a room with a parallel version of it in the exact same room, it has a Maelstrom of all the colors of light, and fragments of space where distance becomes distorted.

Onto ruins that are not in the Silent Expanse, the most famous that is in Wynn is Time Valley. Like the Eldritch Outlook, this bends another rule of the universe, Time, hence the name. Many relics left by the Olm are bent in time, such as a Rusted Shovel (Deja Vu), which is affected by the environment, but also takes some things in the environment with it, sometimes creating paradoxes like a human called Asher. As explained in Deja Vu, Asher died in the past, but still appears in the Time Valley because he time traveled, creating a paradox, trapping them in a loop forever. Another creature, or creatures, including some Olm as well, are also trapped in a day-long Temporal Loop, which are Time Troubles (Tempo Town Trouble). Paradoxes of living beings trapped in Time Valley, like Asher. However, there is a question, if Time Troubles are living beings trapped in a temporal loop, why is Asher not a Time Trouble? Well, it’s quite simple. As Old Man Martyn explains, ‘They’re odd creatures that were forced into a day-long temporal loop by some fools long ago.’ It is likely the fools that Martyn was referring to were Olmic, or if they weren’t Olmic, at least had some ties to them. However, during the time when Asher was alive in Time Valley (Not counting the present), a sign can be found, saying that all Olm should evacuate. Therefore, it is likely that they abandoned Time Valley after learning of a Cosmic Event, which possibly could have been a bombardment of meteors, and not necessarily the single Meteor that kills Asher in Deja Vu. However, the effects of it on Time Valley leads one of the only surviving Olm in Time Valley to say 'The Olm cannot survive here. Time has been ripped asunder... Our only hope is... The expans-" (Timeless Ruin), showing that there could have possibly been a last hope in the Ruined Olmic City, although it was never uncovered, which could have possibly been Anya's Penumbra.

Of course, there is also another main feature of Time Valley, the Temple of Time. A place that will let you be in the memories of time, requiring an item from that time to go there. While you can interact with the environment, it is more like a dream, as when you ‘wake up’ nothing in history would have changed, the best example of this being Theorick. In the quest, you see Theorick before he became corrupted, but when you enter the Ice Barrows, Theorick does not feel familiar around you, instead viewing you as someone sent to ‘purify’ him.

While it is not directly confirmed in-game, it also makes sense to believe the Great Bridge could have also been an Olmic construction that got Corrupted. The main reasoning behind this is that this, along with other confirmed Olmic constructions, share the same build style, and also seems to use Bridge Shrines, which defend the bridge.

However, the most well-preserved, and technically not even a ruin, but rather a hidden city, the Ancient City in the Dernel Jungle. The Olm fled from the Ruined Olmic City to create a home there to escape whatever beast made them all flee. Here, the last remaining Olm in normal conditions of time live. However, there was a massive downfall of their civilization. Due to a(n) (few) object(s) I will get into at a later point, they went insane, trapped in a PTSD situation, still believing that they were about to flee from their previous settlement in the Silent Expanse, and eventually, they either turned to madly worshipping their Overseer of Darkness (*cough* The Eye *cough*), or fearing it to the point of being unable to think straight. However, the objects I will get into, are far more mysterious than we think.
Remember how I said the Silent Expanse was bombarded with Meteors? Meteors on the Physical Plane generally have one magic attached to them, Cosmic Magic. Cosmic Magic is far too mysterious to warrant a whole thread on, but what Cosmic Magic does is that it has the power to turn something into a whole new species (Purple and Blue), drive them to the point of insanity (???), or possibly even both (Mark of the Meteors). Originally coming from Space, imbued with Cosmic Magic on the way, they ended up in the mountains of the Silent Expanse. They were founded by the Olm far, far back, possibly before the earliest known eventful date in Wynncraft (1400 BP). They were later founded by Wynnic Excavators while mining for Emeralds, with them later being covered up to make sure that they could not be used for evil (A Wynnic Excavation). However, either foolishly or out of desperation, the Olm brought 4 Crystal Shards of each color to the Ancient City.

Again, while undated, they possibly could have used the Crystals to prevent the Dern Beast from reaching their territory. However, it had done nothing for the Olm, except putting their civilization to ruin and turning almost all of them to lunatics. The Crystal Shards later made their ways all across Wynn, one even into the Ocean. The Yellow Shard was kept by a Pharaoh of the Desert Empire, being buried to possibly protect it. The Purple Shard was kept near the House of Twain, and a shard of it could have possibly powered all of the Tower of Ascension to give the beast at the top, an imposter of Death, overwhelming power (The Lone Telescope). The Red Shard drifted out into the ocean to create the Volcanic Isles, and while it is not stated in game, it was confirmed by @oculism that it did, and the boss of a Boss Altar, the Magmastream Core, bears a similar resemblance to the Red Crystal Shard. The Green Crystal, however, was returned to the Ancient City by the tribesmen that lived in the area. Who distributed them? Possibly the humans, as the Mining Chief in A Wynnic Excavation said they were dangerous, and would never tell anyone what they saw that day. But another group, they knew of their effects, and with that, became the most powerful organization in not just Wynn, but the entire world as well.
WynnExcavation originally started out as a company that was similar to what it is now, called Gavel Excavation. They examined samples of the meteors of Gylia, to see their effects on those tainted by it. Of course, three of their employees suffered tragic effects to the point of obession, over Mushrooms, Chickens, and Wood or Nuts, as well as the hatred of the two formers.

However, when the Wynn Province was discovered, being the first contact between two worlds, they eventually discover the Crystals, and wanted the immense power of them as well. They were dead set on taking the Crystal Shards, even going as far as extortion and corruption (Government not the Wynnic Corruption) to get it (WynnExcavation Site D). They can easily worm their way into governments to approve their excavations of historical sites, using their massive wealth to bribe leaders.

No place was safe from WynnExcavation, and wherever they believe could have Crystals, they dug there. In fact, there are actually two WynnExcavation sites that don’t have their own quest, the Jungle Temple in Lost Royalty (labeled as WynnExcavation Site E), and the Abandoned Mines in Wynn, possibly with the goal of even reaching the Silent Expanse, oblivious to what it could possibly do to Wynn.

Their employees are also expressive of the attitude WynnExcavation has. Vade is the admin of Site A, and warns the Player that if they keep it up, WynnExcavation will not be happy. Tesha, a scientist working at Site A, later gives dialogue after the quest saying that WynnExcavation has a target on your back. Lykron of Site B originally has a happy attitude, that then turns into frustration and a more serious one, with one of his underlings, Flendar, nearly killing the Player as they explore Site B. Placardus is like Lykron, albeit starting with a more formal expression, and Klerodor seems to be set on his job. Dranfor, however, is likely Amadel’s Right Hand Man, who rules over all the other admins with an iron fist. Uci, the admin of Site D, seems to be doing anything to help the organization, with a scientist, Azure, actually seemingly being the only WynnExcavation employee with a neutral stance with the Player. Thomas, as well as the other traitors (Except Amadel, as I’ll get into him later), know how to put on a fake smile.

Amadel, however, is another case entirely. He knows exactly what he wants and is ten steps ahead of life in almost every way. He first meets the Player as a traitor to WynnExcavation, set on revealing the facade to the public. And eventually, the entire goal of WynnExcavation is revealed through his dialogue as ‘WynnExcavation Leader Amadel,’ as he wants to unite the Crystals to change the world and make him a god. Originally, he becomes Corrupted by them, but later becomes tainted by Shadows, eventually then becoming a manifestation of all the Crystals, lacking any emotion and its only goal is to kill all who oppose. Eventually, however, this Amadel is defeated, and Ragni’s King then takes all the Crystals, and then burns all of them into lava, so that they could never be used again, as he says that people can never be trusted with too much power. Despite it being the most concentrated magic, it quietly disappears, with you being knighted as Wynn’s True Protector.

However, there are other things to note about WynnExcavation. First, the Red Crystal. Despite it forming the Volcanic Isles, which are likely hundreds of degrees hot on the inside, it burns to a crisp when Ragni’s King places them in lava. While this could mean Ragni’s King was a part of the conspiracy, Amadel probably became a manifestation of the crystals themselves, and likely used up all their power to the point of just being ordinary gems. But more notably in my opinion, is Scientist Ynnos. In the quest, One Thousand Meters Under, he says that he was funded by a private organization that later stopped, but the main reason why he needs help is because he is trying to retrieve a Crystal with massive amounts of energy to possibly power all of Ahmsord and maybe even the entirety of Gavel with. Does that sound a bit familiar? However, if you look at the effects of the Crystal in the Void, it is very different than the effects of the other Crystals. Instead of making them insane, they rather sustain life, such as the Villagers that fell into the Void, as they would have been killed if not for the Crystal. However, it can also seemingly be reproduced by another civilization, with Rontaid, the Chief Scientist of the Void Villagers (The Voidagers if you will), being able to recreate a similar crystal. One question about the Void Crystal remains, however, where did it come from? The answer could be quite simple, it could have been another variant of the Crystals in the Canyon of the Lost (Cosmic Crystals), and because a Gavel Excavation site is also seen in the Canyons (forgot the exact coords), it could be possible that Gavel Excavation also studied them as well.
    • Olm were very intelligent and magical
    • Created the Ruined Olmic City, Time Valley, and the Ancient City
      • Possibly built the Eldritch Outlook
    • Now insane because of Crystals
    • Crystals part ways
    • Gavel Excavation studies meteors then hears of crystals
    • Gavel Excavation becomes WynnExcavation (kind of they basically just prioritized that over Gavel Excavation, Gavel Excavation still kinda exists)
    • WynnExcavation becomes foiled by you
    • Void Crystals are weird
    Bonus thing:
Bob’s Mother was probably an Olm, as Ragni’s Library states that she had a different skin color to those of Ragni, and would not state where she came from, as she was certainly not one of Ragni’s own.

They were probably native to Wynn or the Silent Expanse imo, because if they originated from Dern they'd also be dark beings, and Dern would never let them escape
Another theory is that they came from the Nether, escaping the Corruption and creating the Nether Portal as a way to enter our realm, then they buried it again, however there is little to no evidence for this so this is just a hypothesis.

    Most definitely

I don't think it's a shard of the Purple Crystal, the crystal atop ToA is as big as the purple one, I think it was just another crystal that fell into the Ice Canyon and they built the ToA to either harness or worship it. But I do agree that fake Death may be harnessing that crystal's power.

They did, the A Wynnic Excavation secret discovery says they're something from "out of this world", plus there are crystals all over Lake Gylia for example, which we know is the crash site for two gigantic meteors

It was both. First it was imbued with cosmic magic then sent into space.

Oculism said that the jungle tribesmen took the Green Crystal back to the Ancient City

Good thread, and thanks for the plug at the end (join WynnTheory). It's good that you don't get too much into theorycrafting to not confuse the new players, so good job.

    Some additions and corrections:

I believe the Olm actually originated in the Silent Expanse and escaped into Wynn when forces from Dern started capturing them and forcing them into their own dimension. They probably broke through the mountain and fled, surviving for some time in time valley where they tried to find a solution. They likely used time magic in an attempt to reverse time, possibly to get Anya's bracelet before time ran out. However, Dernic forces found them soon enough and they fled into Nesaak. The icy terrain there likely proved uninhabitable and they soon found a way to escape. Maybe they created the Great Bridge to get into Troms so that they could build their last settlement? I have also theorised that the native humans in Iboju Village spotted the Olm constructing the great bridge and built the Matryoshka Idol to fight them off, sealing it away after they discovered that the Olm were friendly. The Olm built their final city in the jungle, where at last the darkness could not find them. However, the Eye was soon placed in the Eldritch Outlook and it found them as they were building up a new, hopeless civilization. I believe it saw them while they were building because of the fact that the main building has eyes built into its design. Anyway, they were driven insane by the Eye and now most of the Olm in the temple are crazed. Very few are still peaceful, but even they are so insane that they are mindless. Unless the Olm still live restricted lives in Dern (which I hope they do since we could save them if so) they seem to have died with Bob (or live on through Old Man Martyn, but barely)

This is an interesting theory that could be true, but I am somewhat sceptical. The Outlook's style does not match that of other Olmic constructs. It seems to be made of many materials originating from the Void Valley. It may have been an Olmic palace judging from its gardens and grand style. However, one thing has always stood out to me about it and it is that it seems to have been built as a giant wall to prevent heroes from entering Dern. It is a colossal barricade in a relatively large valley; the same valley that leads to the Dern Portal. However, no such barricades are present on Gateway island and the wall-like nature is easily explained by the fact that it could simply have been built not to keep the light out by the dark, but to keep the dark out by the Olm. As well as this, the Dern beast says ''The tower stands'' while I would argue that the Outlook is more of a fortress. Perhaps the Eldritch Outlook was previously a tall tower until its walls were added by the Dark.

I would like to add that I believe the Great Bridge was made by the Olm, as the only lore you get for it is ''Run.'' and it does seem to have some sort of magical defence on it. This defence may have been placed by the Corrupt however, because there are Magma Cubes there that can be found at the Nether Gate (iirc)

Another source of this information is the Mark of the Meteors secret discovery

They were found by the Silent Expanse miners hidden behind a rock wall (A Wynnic Excavation) and likely given to a knowledgeable person (possibly Marius Twain) who then gave them to various trustworthy people around the province (a leader of Nemract, Almuj, Nesaak and Ragni, the 4 towns shown in Detlas). I theorise that the Nemract leader threw it to the sea, deciding nobody would find it regardless. The Almuj leader uncovered a tomb and hid it inside, then burying the tomb and not telling anyone. The Nesaak leader hid it away from the town under Twain Lake as they knew the Corrupt wanted it and wanted to suffer no further attacks. Finally, with no place to put it, the Ragni leader handed the Green crystal on to Troms through their Pigman Ravine connection. Troms didn't know what to do with it and passed it to people more knowledgeable about magic; the local Iboju tribe. The Iboju hid it away in the old Olmic temple. But that is just a theory, most of this post is

Finally, I'd like to point out that the Olm wielded magics of both time and space, making them godlike which is similar to the currently-removed Heliolux. The Heliolux are designed similarly to Greek gods with bright beards and a very holy theme. It was once speculated that the Olm were dark counterparts to the Heliolux, but since the species was removed it is questioned. I really hope the Heliolux are added back in a later update.

New Timeless Ruin does hint towards the Olm first being in Time Valley and then running to SE, though imo the most probable thing is that they had spread all throughout southern Wynn and SE, and the Time Valley people ran to the SE people after messing up time.

I am kind of on the side of saying it was made by the Olm, since the Coal Miners in Lutho probably could not survive past the Toxic Wastes, and the Olm were the most magical species in the SE, and they also managed to get into the Toxic Wastes, as well as there being some stairs by the Eldritch Outlook that looks somewhat Olmic. Not to mention in The Eye's arena, there are gray structures in the background that look very Olmic. Although again, it is never confirmed in-game.
Mark of the Meteors is kinda both, which is why I included it after mentioning Purple and Blue as well as ???.
I don't think Marius Twain was alive as far back as the Olm inhabiting Wynn. I just instead think the tribes of the Jungle just dropped off the Crystals in random places scattered far from each other, except the Green one, as it was put back in the temple. Not to mention that if was Marius, then he would be a lot more wrinkled and shriveled than how he appears in Torn in Twain.

However, I have looked at some of them more in detail, and I have added some things you said.

  8. maybe
the boots from the lost soles quest came from a creature that has features like an olm
theres also a secret discovery where you revive a dead olm using time magic but then he dies right away
i think they came from SE because i thought the olm moved out to the dernel jungle and time valley to avoid the darkness

ok i know marius is old but he dies in 570 ap and the crystals were dug up in 800 bp, i have a really hard time believing he had anything to do with them being hidden
like i said above they basically are 100% confirmed to not be post-twain
it'd be a stretch to say marius was alive at the same time as the olm, much less the other ones
they're confirmed to have left time valley and gone to SE - it's not clear if they were once in both but the ones in time valley went to SE, or they all lived in time valley and all moved to SE, or something else, but they definitely did not move to time valley to escape the darkness. and they did go to dernel yes but using the crystals, not normal moving
while i fully agree with the idea that there was a currently unknown servant of the dern beast (qira???????) who helped defeat the olm, i'm pretty sure the one in the final moments quote is just the dern beast itself, while the servant is only actually mentioned in fate of the olm
*technically* he did not say that, what he said was that it was cast out into the ocean and currents took it to where the isles are today. considering the isles only appeared recently (as seen in the world discovery iirc) and the crystal was almost certainly cast out a long time ago it's still very likely they created the isles, but he didn't actually confirm it.

I don't think qira can be a servant for the dern beast as she says "The darkness is coming...but if you Wynn folk are all as strong as you have proven yourself to be, we may just be able to beat it back.", implying that she is against the darkness

wasn't fully being serious about that since there's very little evidence for it, it's just a random guess since there isn't any other character we've thought of who would fit being the servant
however, uh, the idea is that she changed sides at some point, not that she would somehow still be serving the darkness
