Is that true? Or is it only some parts of India? India is a big place with varying cultures and languages.

The vast majority of Indians practice Hinduism. Cows are not 'holy' in the sense that they are not worshipped as a god in Hindu culture (though sometimes associated with divinity), but it is considered taboo to harm or slaughter cattle. The slaughter of cows is even illegal in many of India's states. There's bound to be some actual Indian people around the forums who know more than I do, though.

Hm, I think I'm at least somewhat qualified to answer this. As Stormarend said, it's not that cows are worshipped or considered "holy" by all Indians in specific areas - some religions (Hinduism is the most popular, but sects of other religions do as well) consider it wrong to harm/kill cattle, and some don't. So it is kind of split by area, as in some places there are more Hindus and in some there are fewer, but I don't think there's anywhere where everyone considers cows "holy" or where everyone doesn't.
As for the specifics of it, also as Stormarend said, cattle aren't considered to be "holy" in the sense that they're demigods or something, they're just respected as being "above" other livestock, and thus can often be found in places like temples and, generally, many people in India consider it wrong to kill cattle or eat beef, and will, at the very least, do whatever they can to make sure they personally don't harm cows. For example, in one case, there was somewhat large-scale public outrage that mcdonald's was secretly using beef fat to cook some supposedly "vegetarian" products, after mcdonald's was forced to admit what they were doing at risk of losing a large lawsuit because of it.
(There's also a bull who's sort of a god, Nandi, although there are a few other animal "gods", so he's not the main reason for people respecting cows or anything, but he does help a little.)

To be honest, I'm not really the best source on this topic, but I figured I'd try to chip in with what I do know about it.
