I was wondering about the greed major id and how useful it would be in bossfights like LI/EO or in Raids. My first question is whether mobs spawned in boss fights drop enough emeralds for this to be useful. My second question is whether this is worth it in classes such as mage, which has its own healing.

first question: you shouldn't have to worry about how many mobs there are if you have the stealing ID (in which you should, if you're using greed, I'd say), where simply just hitting the enemy can yield emeralds

second question: I personally wouldn't, since the built-in healing those classes are good enough for sustain. This also applies to other forms of sustain, like health regen and life steal, which is why you see so many mage/shaman builds with negative health regen and/or negative life steal (although, there is a limit, so don't try just stacking as much negative health regen or negative life steal as possible)

Imo, not worth it on mage or shaman (worth it more on shaman than mage though)

And, I know in LI/EO atleast mobs drop plenty of emeralds if you have the stealing ID, and if you have some poison that helps a lot.
