Build Medieval City Wip

    I'm currently working on a medieval city for an adventure map I'm creating and just wanted to show what I've done so far.

    It is very much a work in progress. My main goal now is to finish the castle and then start on the houses in the wealthy district which is going to be inside of the walls.

    Few things I would change/improve:

    I would suggest you make that wall taller to match the entrance

    Give more detail to all the surfaces

    Add a "pop" of color, the build is looking very gray.

    I would personally change the green terracotta on the roof to the dark prismarine

    Otherwise great build!

    Okay I've got a couple suggestions for you here & I think they could help this build A LOT

    1. Centralise what blocks you want to be using & keep using them, the dark oak logs really throw me off when they're used no where else in the build currently and they don't really fit into the pallet right now. I'd also recommend improving your block choices, the green terracotta + dark prismarine looks really weird in my opinion, i'd recommend trying to use a different block on the perimeter. I'd also recommend using a block to break up the stone, other varients of stone aren't really different enough. I'd recommend you use Cyan terracotta more frequently

    2. Try to avoid spamming details on your builds. I've noticed quite a few examples of overdetailing & slab spamming. This is particuarly evident toward the back of the newest image of the entrance with the andesite slabs in the background. Whilst this makes it look less flat, it also looks messy. Sometimes less is more & you'll learn this with time, though generally i'd try to avoid using too many slabs.

    3. I'd raise the walls up higher & make them less vertically semetrical and preferably add a highlight block. It'd add more interest to the build as currently the rounded look to them makes them look extremely samey and uninteresting. Asymmetry can create much more interest in builds than complete symmetry, though asymmetry is generally a good method you can use to create interest across all forms of artwork.

    4. Perhaps try to use more levels on the inner city main entrance, i'd make the entrance part go inwards more to make it less flat & blend in less with the rest of the wall.

    5. i'd also attempt to improve the shape of the roofs, they're incredibly same-y and adding some height would be nicer, the general shape of them could be improved as a whole, I can see you attempted to make them gradually go toward the tip but it doesn't really work.

    For the dark oak logs, I am going to use them more. The build is a WIP and I will add more details later. For now I have just basically made the back-bone of the castle and started detailing some bits. As for the green terracotta and prismarine, I have just realised I might be slightly color blind as to me the color of the blocks look the same with the only difference being the texture. So I might have to change it. On another note, the castle is supposed to be made out of different types of stone, that is the aesthetic I'm aiming for, but yea, it could use with some other blocks in some places. However not in the flat wall of the castle, but rather as decorative pieces.

    With this I agree I might have gone a bit over-board. But I don't want it to be too much "less" (as many of the builds in Wynn are). Less is more, yes, but more less is just... less.

    The walls were the first thing I built before really knew the scope of the project. However, these walls are supposed to be the inner walls of the city, blocking off the rich part from the poor part. So while it could benefit from hight, they are not supposed to be very tall. For the real outer wall of the city I'll take this in to account more. Also there is supposed to be buildings on both sides of the wall, so detailing them and adding highlight-blocks is not a very high priority now. First I need to see how the buildings look around the wall and if it is necessary to change them. I mean, you aren't supposed to see the walls very much. But I will definitly come back to them later on.

    Once again, I did this very early on and left it like 20% done. I am not that fond of it and will probably completely rework it.

    Totally agree when I look at it more. I have never done any roofs and just wanted to have something to get a feeling on how everything could look later. The roofs in a building are important for the whole picture and I wanted to sort of get that before I finalize everything.

    Lastly, this is the first time I really build anything in Minecraft. So this experience is for me to just learn some things. This build I'm creating is supposed to be something I work maybe upwards of 5 years on, so nothing is final and everything is subject to change in the future.
