    Minecraft:
    I did two runs of CiB, both ended due to Specter explosions when I was at full health. However, I noticed one specter explosion nearly one shot me, while the second deleted me from existence. Is mob damage randomized by a small amount, or is this a bug?

    Mob damage is treated the same way as player damage; there is a range of damage that they can deal, so it's possible you are hit by a low roll and then a high roll.
