I died at the far north of gavel and respawned in the jungle village near Troms. Is it random, or...?

You get teleported to the nearest town you discovered.

If you were in a quest are it is normal

Most of the time, you get respawned to either the nearest town you been to or the closest town to your coords. Like if you die in Seaskipper, you could respawn in the city where you left from or you could respawn in Lusoco (Near Tower of Ascension) because the coordinates are closest to the sea skipper one.

This is how some people accidentally end up in places they are not supposed to be, like people spawning in Thesead when they do the Qira fight, even though Qira hive is nowhere close to Thesead

The majority of quest areas or areas you teleport to are off the edge of the map, so you frequently respawn in a city that's nearest to those coordinates (Ternaves). It's been complained about a lot and there have been a lot of suggestions to fix it, but for the being it remains due to lobbying by Ternaves' tourism department.
