I honestly didn't mind the quest existing and it definitely wasn't my least favorite quest, but I also don't mind the quest not existing..

 

What is the context behind this image?

 

EotS was awful, but I though the premise was interesting enough for the quest to just be reworked, I didn't want it removed tbh.

It also doesn't help that it's replacement is somehow almost worse.

 

I dunno - Lexdale Witch Trials is pretty good, apart from the parkour

to be fair you can destroy any quest this way, regardless of quality.

I agree but the quest is... really bland. Saving a girl by chasing a parasite around for like 10 minutes at most with a boss fight in the middle that (unless you're high level) can't even finish and giving the mayor the parasite is imo less interesting than stopping a demonic, town-controlling cult from spawning a demon and destroying Gavel. I agree that Nagarath's lore was a bit too self-contained and should've had implications on other parts of the lore but... come on. I liked EoTS's plot more than LWT's.

 

the point is that this asshole mayor just decides on a whim to burn this random civilian, literally gathers the entire village around the stake to watch her execution and she decides that then is the perfect time to start defending herself huh? And then the mayor decides now is the time to just stop the exection because she said "no it wasnt me" and then does nothing anyway.

There is no trial (despite the quest being named Lexdale Witch Trials)

There is no story

What little story we do have makes less sense than the abomonation that preceeded it.

This update was supposed to improve Gavel by ushering the old, but this is litterally just an old Gavel quest. Has like 2 steps, no lore connections, bland story, and has no reason to exist other than to give the player some xp and emeralds and take up space.

 

Honestly I agree, EotS was pretty poor implementation, but I don't think Lexdale Witch Trials is any better. It's such a waste of a great area.

 

I was pretty hyped about it at first, but it turns out "trials" meant absolutely nothing ):

 

The image was from one of the first stages of the pre-1.20 Eye of the Storm quest, where you save a man named Talos from being sacrificially fed to wolves in an underground ruin.

This post's title is a quote from Skyrim, where a group of people called the Nords, making up around half of the population, worship a man-turned-god called Talos.

 

Not gonna lie that's basically the essence of the quest, with some unskippable dialogue thrown in for good measure

Yeah I get it, it connects kinda to the lore a tiny bit because it's a dark parasite - but that's the extent of it.
Apart from that I thought the quest itself was okay as a quest not as a story.

 

First of all he’s not an “asshole mayor”. He’s egotistical, does that make him an asshole? Maybe. Also “we gonna burn this bitch because she’s doing dark magic” is perfectly reasonable and actually makes a LOT of sense. How do I know this? Because the quest is clearly based off of the real life events known as the Salem Witch Trials, where hundreds of people were burned or hanged after being falsely accused of witchcraft purely off the basis of a few people saying “well I saw them do it”. This later resulted in the judges realizing they were wrong, but not admitting it because that would ruin their reputation. (There’s a famous Monty Python scene mocking this kind of thought process and the events that occurred at Salem from Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Bare in mind that this societies life was built solely on reputation and religion, with little of either you would’ve had a fate considered worse than death, so to admit being wrong was essentially to be damned forever as it would’ve ruined their reputation. There is a very good play on what happened there by the name The Crucible, by Arthur Miller.

Now, I thought the parkour was fun, but I do agree the quest was pretty bare bones. The quest also didn’t live up to its name, or the Salem version, a whole lot.

What could’ve made this quest much better was if it was actually structured like The Crucible. Might be tricky to pull off, but I would see it as a more of a mind game thought out puzzle strategy quest conveyed through text. Maybe the player is playing the role of a defence attorney for somebody falsely accused of witchcraft, and has to pick their words wisely as to see their client determined innocent with a mountain of false evidence going against them. Or maybe they player themselves is accused of witchcraft and have to prove their innocence. Maybe Lexdale could’ve been this crazed Bovemist community that went to church half their day and things spiraled out of control from there when people got bored (taking inspiration from The Crucible). Maybe there is an actual witch brought on as an agent of the decay and the player would have to use social deduction to figure out who it is. I don’t know.

But, yes I agree, it could’ve been better.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think Lexdale witch trials is bad, but it's not really good either. It feels wrong for such a major and dramatic quest to be replaced with a short and irrelevant quest.

 

This is all true. There's a reason people don't praise D&D for its story.
