What's the deal with the colossus? Why is it there? Who made it? What was it made for? If there's a guardian of the canyon then it's guarding the canyon against SOMETHING.

The canyon colossus is the new most powerful boss in the game. It beats out The Eye in health many times over, and it's arguably more lethal. It's also gigantic, probably the height of EO or more. So what gives? There's pretty much no information regarding this guy. It's a golem, which means someone or something made it. It's ancient as creatures have fossilized within it and there is prehistoric fauna.

What do you guys think of the Canyon Colossus? Any speculations as to where it came from?

Well, according to the new discoveries, no-one knows.
It is the same type of colossus that split the Ahms region in two, so that might help but I'm really not sure.

I thought Doguns created Colossus since they can somewhat control it with their magic.

The Cinfras library refers to a ’they’ arriving to the canyon, and the description of the ground trembling leans in the direction of ’they’ being a group of Colossus.
Something larger than the other beings that arrived seemed to spark concern since it didn’t appear to be ’the colossus’.
The same text also mentions ’bugs’ from a forest causing the demise of the guardians, turning them into something far more aggressive against their surroundings.

My theory is (with the re-vamped RoL questline) that something similar to Dullahan happened to the guardians of the sky islands. The creature we see in the cutscenes from that quest could very possibly be described as a bug. It’s not entirely implausible that the same bug spent the years burrowed below ground creating much tinier versions of itself which subsequently spread all the way to the sky island region.

Why would they be drawn to that region in particular? Well, assuming that the forces of light and dark have some innate pull towards each other (otherwise, is it just a cooncidence that the darkness’ portals seem to only have appeared in the Light forest?), it would make sense for the bugs to head in that direction. Consider all the various types of angels which, although hostile in this case, generally represent good. I would also include the dragons in that equation, although this is a slightly weaker trail, as representing the both volatile but ’Light’ nature and creatures seen in the Light realm.

It doesn’t seem impossible that Orphion sent other people to fight against the spread of the Dark, unknownst to Lari who was dealing with her own struggles. Those people could have shaped the colossus, or have been the group of colossi themselves which might fit better with being infected by the dark as golems might not be sentient enough to experience that kind of influence.

Finally, I don’t think the group of colossi all fell overnight. Not knowing how many of them there were I’d consider that at least one of them got infected, forcing the others to neutralize that threat. Another scenario is that most of them ended up infected (all but the lone colossus that we know today) before they realized what had happened, eventually turning more Dark; aggressive, volatile, etc. until that one remaining colossus had to fight them. Who knows what happened after that?

Those are my theories based on the RoL quests and the ancient records in the Cinfras library.

The Ahms region collapsing is also blamed upon villager's greed too. Maybe it's old lore, maybe the colossus reacted to that.

Also of note is that the colossus is very... robotic.. it has a defence system and several of the raid mechanics are reminiscent of codes (the puzzle) and pressure plates/button (the plate rooms). The colossus itself would have likely been made in the same image of whatever humanoid race in the region that built it... but it doesn't look like any of them. So we don't know who built it at all. I'd say it'd be humans owing to it's human anatomy (having a cerebellum amongst other things) but even then, the only "human" species around are the sky pirates and they don't have the capabilities to make something like that. There's also the old civilisation that the ancient temples SI discovery relates to but we know nothing about them.

Could it be an Olm-like species that used to live in SI?

Probably not. Which leads to some issues, because the Doguns are the only species known to have some sort of control over the colossus.

The colossus does not have a Dogun aesthetic. We can assume that the creators were some sort of human as the colossus has a head, stands upright, wields two swords, has two eyes, and is overall a very mechanical being. If it had a nose then it could've been made by ancient villagers. If the creators were human, then how did humans arrive in Kandon Beda?

probably a long stretch but the humans were probably skyraiders. There's no proof, but they're the most possible people to build these things.

The dark parasites are specifically mentioned as unable to enter the canyon because the walls keep shifting due to the influence of the guardian.

    Spoilers ahead, obviously.

Here's what we know for sure so far:

    - There are multiple Colossi that have existed at some point in time.
    - The ancient Gavelian villagers regarded them as deities.
    - Though the Colossi seem to be mystical creatures of magic, they are actually incredibly-advanced technological constructs.
    - Pre-0 AP, the Colossi were neutral. It is unknown whether the villagers affected them in any way.
    - With the opening of the Dern and Nether portals, the Sky Islands (still a solid region of land at the time) Colossus went haywire and physically fragmented the region, destroying much of the landmass and exposing the void below.
    - Whereas the neutral Colossus state had green eyes, the haywire Colossus state has red eyes.
    - By ripping the world apart, the Sky Islands Colossus sealed its own fate, falling into the void. (Speculation: this may explain the giant sword that is seen on a void island in the Gavel Update trailer)
    - The Canyon Colossus is suffering from the same fate. Unlike the Sky Islands Colossus, it seems to be capable of producing "Colossus Spawn," small minions that fight for the Colossus, at will.
    - The Ultimate Sky Islands Secret Discovery reveals that if the Canyon Colossus is not defeated, the Canyon of the Lost will suffer the same fate as the Sky Islands- that is, it will be fragmented and transformed into a region of floating islands.
    - The Colossi were designed with a feature that allows them to be deactivated from the inside.

I mean, the Colossus says things like "DEFENSE SYSTEM ACTIVATED" and has battery-looking "cores" so they might be related to Runes and the Olm. In Cinfras County or Thesead / Eltom Lower (i forget) there is an NPC who talks about THE LAD. (big rune dude who looks kind of like a golem)

Or, perhaps, Farcor took a giant steaming dump on Gavel and it hardened and turned into a fricking Colossus

The canyon colossus was being calmed/stabilized by the doguns, and only started consistently going out of control after they were almost wiped out, in 300 ap. why hasn't it destroyed the region yet? it's had 700 years with no control, but the Ahms region colossus shattered its region in just days while the doguns were still alive. Was it not under the control of the doguns?
During its fight the hands and body cracks of the colossus appear magma-like, and so do its facial features when its head comes off. it definitely has some sort of lava theme happening, and the doguns kept it under control. I think the Doguns are the most likely creators.

It could've had to do with Farcor, the dragon from the Fortuneteller quest. Supposedly he split the Ahms. So perhaps he created the colossuses, which isn't too implausible since he seems to be some sort of god, and, after seeing the villager's greed, and the dwarves' extermination of the doguns, decided to have his golems split the Ahms and begin ravaging the canyon.
