So I've always gone with the idea that after my inventory fills, I should identify all of the unidentified items I have then sell them all, and that'll make me the most money.

Going through with the character I am now, I notice more and more that, after identifying and selling everything, I seem to just be breaking even, or making just a bit more or less.

So I wanna know if anyone who's put time in this can answer, what's the optimal way to go about this?

It seems that more often, I'll make a small profit from selling all my unique, but selling rares usually gets me just breaking even, if not losing money.

What you're seeing is correct. At the blacksmith, uniques profit, rares usually break even, and higher rarities lose money outright. Fableds in particular are an easy way to waste money. In the next update, there's apparently a rebalance coming so it isn't as bad.

To make bigger profits, you'll have to sell items that are in demand to other players.

So basically, when I'm just opening lootchests while questing and such, I should just take the uniques to sell, and leave the rares?
I always take legendaries and hold those for the market, which makes it very inconvenient that it has been down all week.

Do you know where set items fit on this? Are their returns closer to uniques or rares?

Sets are closer to rares and don't blacksmith well.

As you get closer to endgame (lv90+ range) you should try to pick up rares and learn what items are meta, there's a ton of insane unique and rare armors that people will pay for.
Note that weapons just don't sell well so don't take them if you're trying to market.
