"From the Nether Gate, a shard of cosmic stone was ejected. Its purity was defiled, and the first man to wield it went mad, raving about the fall of the cosmos' beauty."

Oh yeah, Lunar Spine, the best and epicest weapon in the game. But that aside...

    ... from the Nether Gate?

Indeed, it is kind of odd for a shard of cosmic stone to be ejected from the Nether Gate. But as I thought about it more and more, the forces of corruption and the cosmos seemed to be more and more similar.

First of all, we look at the effects of the two forces. Both bend the mind and cause irregular behavior. Corruption causes aggression, and cosmic magic causes obsession. In OotG, the white angel meteor sample gives you the nausea effect. What else gives you nausea? The CoW cutscenes in Temple of Legends.

Garoth's Note: Briefly.. I saw beyond. I do not have the words to describe... Cold yet searing. Land plagued by war and disease, and then I saw... it.

    Cold, yet searing.

Cold; not how you would typically describe a hellscape. But how else could the term "cold" be used to describe things? You might call the light of the moon and stars cold; the cold light, cold glare, unlike the warm light of the sun. Of course, moonlight and starlight doesn't actually make you cold - just like the nether and corruption doesn't make you cold or warm, necessarily. Cold could describe the hollow, the merciless; dark and shadowy, yet still luminescent and flickering like a flame that gives no heat.

Some say it's a fish, but some say it's a spaceship. I say it's a spaceship. In my eyes, it doesn't look like it was once a living creature.

But if it's a spaceship, what's the red? Perhaps... the same bloody red stone of the nether? of corruption?

Wybels! They're known to be attracted towards cosmic magic. Now, if we look at the design of wybels, we see that they have horns, wooly fluff, and cloven hooves.

"Horns of a goat and a ram, goat's fur and ears, nose and canines of a pig; a typical depiction of the devil in Christian art. The goat, ram and pig are consistently associated with the devil." - Wikipedia

Wybels and the devil in Christian art are very similar. The devil resides in hell. So why would wybels, related to cosmic magic, have a similar appearance to that of the devil, of hell; of the nether?

TLDR: corruption is similar to cosmic magic, through lunar spine's lore, garoth quest, seavale spaceship, and wybels.

nethers car more like nethers spaceship... i mean, cars seem a bit too advanced for wynn... so is nethers car actually an alien automobile?

Well, it is called Lunar Spine, so maybe check out Half-Moon Island for something there.

On lore diiscord we agreed it is a sea creature. I had the same thought.

If it crashed, there are pripably some dead bodies...

    Similar? Perhaps.

    1) Nether is not the source of the Corruption, it is a world where Corruption took over
    2) (To my knowledge) there are no records of cosmic magic having any effect outside minds. None
    3) If Corruption would be Cosmic magic, why is there no Corruption in Gavel?

uhh... Pit of Despair ? iirc they do refer to that place as corrupted
"A massive corrupted pit is visible in the distance, to the north-east. A similarly huge dark hand seems to be sprounting from within it. It strains your mind to view..."

iirc that one is getting removed, @oculism?

I don't think it was meant to be connected to the Corruption, as it is from a demon, not from mix of Light and Dark. Interesting.
Even then, it is in no way tied to cosmic magic.
