So I just got to level 68 and was doing temple of the legends. I brought all the quest items and everything. UNTIL he told me I had to go all the way to the portal. I asked my friend how long Temple of the legends was, and yeah, it’s like a huge go fetch quest so if anyone is interested in doing this quest, don’t unless you like super go fetch quests.

Personally, I think that ToL isn't that bad compared to the Ultimate Weapon.
    Now that's annoying.

Mostly, I think the hardest (and most annoying) part of ToL is CoW, but I guess the quest itself is annoying.

TOL on your second time is much easier because you have PTSD and remember to get all of the items and get some teleport scrolls first

ultimate weapon atleast gets you easy 7 le whereas ToL doesnt reward you much.
the grind spot has been nerfed too much and the bobs weapons you can buy are easily replaced with similar lv 70 legendaries and often actually better

The problem with this is that you can just argue that all quests are just fetch-quests - enter this cave and kill something but bring back its skin as proof... do this but bring back proof of your deed. Even something like AJB (arguably one of the best quests in the game) tells you to go and FETCH some dark matter or something from the dern beast in the RoC and then fetch people's body parts to use as bait. Loads of people don't like the constant fetching during this quest and that is understandable but truth be told, sure your fetching items for a long time but is it really any different than doing multiple shorter quests, than just 1 long big one? I quite like ToL as I take the time to actually read the text and it makes you appreciate it more if you understand how in universe only the greatest people can enter.

TL:DR if you don't like fetch quests, don't play any rpg ever

Yeah I just find it more annoying because ToL has a purpose (kinda) and isn't like collect 50 of some random thing in the wilderness.

To say that every quest is a fetch quest because almost every quest involves bringing an item to something is extremely misleading. In the same way that a quest with 1 thing to fetch is much different from another with 100 things to fetch. And the other important difference is that most other quests have something to break the fetching up or heavily reduce backtracking like cutscenes, teleportation such as in Fate of the Fallen, puzzles, interesting or witty dialogue, player choice, fighting sections, parkour, boss fights, etc. Which is why people like AJB because it has those other elements to break up gameplay.

Temple of Legends on the other hand is 80% fetching and backtracking over half the map that just recycles content from other quests like Creeper Infiltration. Nothing breaks up the fetching and backtracking because the boss fight, (which is the only unique part of it), is at the end of it, not in between it. While you do learn a little bit about CoW along the way it really does not make up for all the fetching and backtracking. And the difference between it and shorter fetch quests is that the latter are small-scale and don’t require you to travel far and backtrack multiple times. And they’re not as significant so you can just skip and not miss anything majorly important.

To be fair, you only NEED to the temple of legends once to reap all the "rewards"

Understandable, you make good points. Sure, other quests have things to break it up and make it more interesting, though ToL still has this to a degree, through its dialogue and tension built through all the different things needed to make the helmet to enter CoW's cave. If you think this builds the tension as it shows how powerful it is and how the helmet must be incredibly strong in order to even attempt to even reach it. Sure the quest probably needs modernising and inclusion of new more interesting features, but even if this were to happen, people would still be annoyed by all the fetching, right? So we remove most of the fetching and we're left with a smaller scale quest that doesn't build the tension to boss fight at the end.

The problem I have with this thread is that (assuming this is the player's first run-though), it sort of misses the whole point of the quest. Sure playing through multiple times, the quest is tedious, though through a first play through, I personally didn't care about the fetching since I was more dreading facing the CoW since you need all these rare ingredients to simply make the helmet. As the player is complaining about this, I can't help but think they may have just skipped the dialogue or are just not interested in the context, hence my annoyance.

    Tol has:
-Interesting dialogue through the lore and context of the Tol and CoW
-fighting sections, both through the Cow's cave and in other places, such as Maro Peaks, Dernal Jungle, etc.
    -Parkour up the flying island

Sure not loads but enough to argue that its not completely fetch related - though tbf you did say 80%, Ill give you that. Though you gotta bare its age in mind as well compared to newer quests, hence the potential need for modernisation.

I just think they could’ve done a better job with the pacing and build tension in other ways. Like how the entire Silent Expanse builds up to the Eye fight through quests, discoveries, and general exploration. Whereas the ToL quest feels like I’m grocery shopping instead of going on a heroic adventure to slay a horrific beast. It doesn’t help the build up of tension either when it breaks immersion by practically requiring you to use the wiki regardless if it’s your first time doing the quest or not. I redid the quest a couple of months ago on my archer and even having done it 3+ times b4 I still couldn’t remember where everything exactly was and I didn’t want to waste time looking in every nook and cranny of Maro Peaks or the Jungle.

So whenever I do replay that quest I go, “Oh yeah, time to fight CoW,” before giving a sigh from realizing all the stuff required before it :-/

It’s not necessarily a bad thing to revisit places either; it’s just when the quest doesn’t add anything to those places besides making it a grocery store then that becomes a problem.

I’ll give you that parkour one because it is comparable to other quests, but the fighting sections I was thinking more so along the lines of the bridge section of The Tower of Amnesia or the other bridge section in Fate of the Fallen, and less cannonfodder and avoidable enemies.

Yeah all of that is true, but I guess you have to put the age of the quest into relation of the newer content as well. I guess it probably needs a make over as it is shame that so many people are put off by it as it is a cool concept

Well, to be honest, remaking a quest like ToL is like demolishing a sculpture and remaking it. The quest is so old it's basically like an artifact, it's been there since when? 2013? 2014? I think remaking such a quest would remove the nostalgia/old feeling more than it would add. Maybe change some parts to make it less of an annoying fetchquests, but the most fundamental parts (Fighting CoW, giving Kelight the quest items you got along the way, meeting Garull and Rayshyroth, that kinda stuff) should remain.
