    A Journey Beyond:
    Chapter 3:

I rode with Aledar for some time on our horses, it was once again a short ride west to the Roots. I knew Aledar and the others knew something I didn’t, but I didn’t want to press it. They did let me in on a top-secret quest after all, it must be an honour to even be talking with Lucio or Elphaba. I pondered in silence until Aledar spoke once again. “We’re here.” He said. His voice was raspy, like he was becoming one of them. He looked at me, and his eyes were tinged with red. I took a nervous step back and said, “Are you ok?” He grimaced. “No, I have a weakness and resistance to the Corruption. It affects me, but it doesn’t take me. Do you understand?” I nodded and looked away. The sky was black and smoky as usual, and the groans and screeches of Blazes, Wights, and Corrupteds echoed through the dark obsidian and stone. We had arrived at the head of the Roots, where the Portal sat embedded in the wall. Aledar beckoned to me and we rode around to the slope that led down to the front of the Gateway to the Nether.

When we arrived there we rode past all the now weak Nether creatures, feebly shooting or swinging at us. Ignoring them, Aledar continued. “The caves and tunnels around the Roots are a lot more complex than originally thought to be. They go deep into the land around here, stretching out as far as Nemract or Almuj. They serve as perfect burrowing areas for powerful creatures, including one right over…” We were in a side-cavern now, right of the portal. He slowly spun around with his palms facing forward. “There!” He thrust them out, and the wall before us exploded, revealing a narrow corridor leading down. A cold and deadly breeze rustled my armor straps.

I raised an eyebrow at Aledar. “You sure there’s a Derny thing creature down there?” He shrugged. “Most likely. Come one!” He marched down the tunnel with me close behind him. This didn’t seem like a corrupted tunnel though, the colors were different. The Corruption is grey and red, hot and loud. This cave was black and purple, cold and silent. Dangerous. Scary… I heard a faint whispering echo through the pipe. Aledar stuck his arm out, a clear gesture saying “Stop and be quiet.” He looked around, on edge. “Lets go. The sooner we get out of here, the better.” he whispered. I heard a faint bubbly roar up ahead, not human, but not monster either. Lava, yes, a huge pool of it. I looked out the edge and a spout of the hot stuff shot at my face. I recoiled, my face blistering and in pain. I winced and took a sip of a healing potion. In a few seconds, it had receded. Aledar stood behind me and peered at the far end of the lake.

“We can’t use spells to cross, it’s too long. Even my advanced Wynnic Rune magic can’t boost us that far. Maybe if we had-” The cavern trembled and dust trickled from the ceiling. Dozens of pounding footfalls were rumbling from where we came. Suddenly, at least 10 Dragonlings burst from the gap. “Wings…” finished Aledar. I knew what I had to do. Leaping forward, I jumped into their group, Spin Attack spelling them to stun them in place. I threw down a few Smoke Bombs and Vanished out. The Demonic Dragons screamed and flailed at me. They were wounded, but not dead. They charged me, roaring in rage. Bracing myself, I cast one of my most powerful spells, the Multihit. The entire group was lifted into the air, slashing and smashing them. All but 1 died, falling to the ground limp and cold. Their bodies dissolved, but their wings remained on the floor, flopping and trying to rise. The single weak and nearly dead Demonic Dragon stirred from the floor. It opened its red eyes and saw me looming over it, yelped like a puppy, and scampered back to where it came from.

I looked over at Aledar. He had his eyebrows raised and hands behind his back. “Uhh, good work! We should be able to use those to try and fly across.” I picked up a pair and they flapped to aggressive life, straining to get away. Aledar did the same and stood on the edge of the cliff we were on. “Come on, these things won’t last for long!” He jumped and I followed. The wings held us up and carried us through the air effortlessly. Occasional lava geysers blasted magma up, but we easily avoided them, soaring through the air to the opposite bank. The wings were getting weaker, slowing down and flapping weakly. I started losing height, too far from the bank to land. In a desperate attempt to live, I whipped my dagger out and cast a Vanish Spell, launching me forward with just enough power to land on solid ground, my wings vaporizing in the heat behind me. Aledar lightly landed behind me, dropping his on the ground. “That was too close,” I said. “Sorry, I could cast a Wynnic spell for your wings, I needed my hands. An energy spell was all that was needed.”

I turned and froze. A purple and black mangled thing laid twisted on the floor, facing towards us. Quick as a flash, I flicked my still unsheathed dagger at it, hoping to wound it or maybe even kill it. It didn’t look all that strong or big, and wielding only an obsidian scythe of some kind. A low hum emanated from it, and my dagger froze in mid air, suspended by that thing’s magic. It dropped to the floor, harmless and inert. Suddenly, the monster turned and took off down the corridor behind it. “Kill that progeny!” yelled Aledar, charging down the cave in pursuit. I scooped my knife off the floor and slid it into a sheath, close behind Aledar. The Mangled Progeny was way faster than us, though, it was already out of sight. The tunnel shook again, small pebbles and dust raining from the roof. Purple and black mist coiled out of the walls. Suddenly, a massive spike flew out of the side of the tunnel we were running in, knocking me to the floor and I think breaking a few ribs. I winced in pain and struggled to my feet, Aledar turning ahead of me to see what happened. His eyes widened and he yelled something, masked by the rumbling of the cave. My chest snapped back into place; he had cast a healing spell, like mages do.

I caught back up to him, more spikes erupting from the floor and walls behind us. “THAT THING IS GONNA BRING THIS WHOLE PLACE DOWN IF IT DOESN’T STOP!” I shouted over the noise. “WHAT?!” asked Aledar. “NEVERMIND!” I called back. We kept running, until suddenly, the tight tunnel widened into a small room. The Mangled Progeny had just reached it ahead of us, soaring through another exit, but not before collapsing the passage behind it. “Damn, we missed it!” I growled. Aledar shook his head. “No, the Progeny used a Life Bind Spell. That blockage is tied to an alternate life force or several life forces. We kill the creature or creatures, we clear the blockage, but where…” The ground beneath us shifted, and suddenly, about 10 short black worm things crawled out of the ground, small greyish-brown lumps riddling their bodies. “Those things! It tied it to them!” cried Aledar. Without a second thought, I threw a series of smoke bombs and dodged the nearest Progenitor. Most of them suffocated in the cloud, but 3 remained. The collapsed area trembled and several of the largest boulders vaporized.

“Yes, keep at it Thing500!” encouraged Aledar. The last 3 Progenitors were wounded, so I finished them with one of my favorite spell combinations: Multihit, Spin, Smoke. By the time the dust cleared, the only sign anything was ever here was a small pile of steaming worm remains. The rest of the wall disappeared, opening to a larger room, a bit of a cavern at this point. The Mangled Progeny stood cornered in the middle, spinning around its weapon, smoke curling off its emancipated limbs. I charged in, ready to fight. “Thing500 wait!” called Aledar, but I ignored him. Spell after spell, smoke, dust, and bits of Dern monster flew around. It never stood a chance, its mutilated body thudding to the floor. There was no blood, no liquids at all. Its body was dry, it looked like it was made of paper and sand. Even as I stared at it, the body crumbled to dark ashes and blew away, leaving only a dark purple pearl shining in the faint light cast over me by the purple mist coiling off the ceiling. The light then dimmed, and the mist evaporated, leaving me and Aledar in silent darkness.

A spark, and Aledar lit a torch. The shadows on his face made him look like a murderer, but his eyes had a different light in them. Instead of cold, hard eyes, they had a tinge of surprise and admiration. “Wow, I thought we would have a hard fight on our hands. You did very well here. I’ll cast a Gammalight spell over us, but I won’t be able to do much more, runic magic costs a lot of magic energy, or mana, and it takes a long time to recharge.” He closed his eyes and whispered a spell and my eyes felt like someone was pressing them into my head. My vision blurred for a second, before it cleared and I realized I could see everything just fine now. “Let’s go, this will only last a few minutes.” said Aledar as he stamped out his torch. He was right about mana; he looked like he was drugged and tied with a loose rope.

We trudged back up the cave, where we had some time to talk about things. I asked him about runic magic and Wynnic spells, and where he learned them. He said he found an ancient dictionary of some sorts in the Wynn Plains Monument, a secret building hidden deep in the Nivla Forest. Aledar studied the book for weeks, mastering the language within and learning its secrets. What he found was that Wynnic spells were so powerful, you could do almost anything with a few words. After mastering runic magic, he stowed the book away deep in Almuj’s Emerald Labyrinth. I decided not to tell him I easily robbed that bank of over 260,000 emeralds. When we reached the lava pool again, Aledar took a swig of a mana potion and used a summoning spell for 2 of the wings on the other side. They were limp, so he had to drink the rest of his mana potion to use an energy spell of them so they could fly again.

After a minute or 2, the Gammalight spell finally wore out, just in time too, for we had finally made it back to the surface. We summoned our slightly skittish horses and rode out of the Roots of Corruption. Upon exiting them, we saw it was dark, and decided to rest until morning at where this all started: The Rusty Recruit in Detlas. We rode into the city and booked 2 rooms at the inn, then passed out.

    To be continued...

Aaaand of course I will be writing chapter 4 soon, it will take some time tho, since I've never actually done this quest before lol im following the wiki/YouTube videos even though I don't want to
