To ID an item, go to an item identifier (The one in Detlas is right in the middle of town). After paying a small fee, you'll identify the item. What this does is unlock the item for use. For example, if you get a rare spear you won't be able to use it until it's identified. Upon identifying, you'll notice unique stats on your item. A rare spear may have fast attack speed with 20-50 fire damage, while a normal tier item might just have slow attack speed with neutral damage. There's also other identifications, like walkspeed, xp bonus, mana regen, the list goes on. These identifications only apply when you're holding the item (or wearing it if it's an armor piece/accessory). They stack, so if your spear has 20% walkspeed bonus, and some boots you find have 5%, you'll get a 25% movement speed bonus.

Hope this helped! Also, when you identify an item most of the time it'll have identification ranges. So those boots with 5% walkspeed may vary from a 2% bonus to 10%. You can reroll your identifications (the raw health stat doesn't change however, nor the elemental defenses or skill point bonuses. Also the damage and attack speed doesn't change for weapons), so if you got a 2% roll, you can reroll it and possibly get something better. Rerolling stats costs emeralds and costs 10x (I think...) the previous amount each time! So roll sparingly.
