Hey everyone! Like the title says, if you like to write music or like music production, let's talk about it!

To start off, I want to say that I have been doing remixes and writing original music for a while now, and have just recently started posting it online. I am hoping I can build up an audience and make this into a career.

I use Ableton Live and some plugins like the East West stuff, Native Instruments, etc. I end up spending a lot of time on sound design and making synth patches. Lately though I am realizing I should be focusing more time on learning music theory. Considering that people rarely remember a synth sound, but will definitely remember a melody. I really want to make music that can be easily remembered, music that sounds like a lot of thought was put into it.

I love to try and capture a specific atmosphere in each song, I once built a beach house in Minecraft and later decided to try and write a theme song for it. My goal was to really capture the general feeling and mood of residing in a home by the beach. If it were an area in a game, this song would be what plays in the background as you explored. Naturally, it's a peaceful song, but I just can't resist minor keys, so there is a section of the song that maybe symbolises a storm swelling on the horizon. Considering I was trying to capture the mood of living in a beach house, I think it was okay to have the song turn dark temporarily. As not every day at the beach is a bright sunny day. One other cool thing I want to mention, I tried to make the opening of the song sound like a door bell was being rung. I like to have unique things like this in my music, it adds a certain level of personality to the song.

I do all the music production myself, I write, arrange, mix, and master. It’s a lot to remember and takes forever haha. But at the end of the day I have a lot of fun doing it! If this is your cup of tea, let's discuss it!

    Hiya there

I’m super new to music production, I haven’t even started to make a full song yet just messing around with stuff.

I play like 5 instruments and have a decent grasp of theory, and am also pretty good with computers, so putting them together is the obvious next step.

I bought FL studio recently and are planning on using that, but fuck me it’s complicated. In my heart I know that like your first 100 songs or tracks will be shit before I get close to making something good, so the next thing to do is just practice practice practice but I find it kinda disheartening when you make something you think is great in the moment then listen to it later and it’s just... not that good?

still with DAWs as expensive as they are I don’t really have a choice but to use it.

I am hoping that I’ll start getting a bit better at production and finding and settling into my style and genre of music I want to make.

If you have any tips please share!

I write wynncraft-like music and I enjoy doing it. My songs usually have a repetitive base line and a fair amount of dissonance. I have only used the musescore software so I don't know much about other software for music making.

    5 instruments, wow! That's amazing.

I totally feel your pain when you make something and listen later and realize it not good. I do that all the time, even though I have been writing music for about 5 or 6 years. I have yet to find a good way to truly get around this. It's quite frustrating really. But one thing that seems to help sometimes is to swap my approach to writing. Sometimes, I will write the melody first, them come in and add chords. If I realize that is not working and I am making no progress I will stop, get rid of the melody and start over. But this time start writing the chords, and add the melody in later. It just stinks when I only notice the song is bad the next morning...

I hear a lot of good things about FL Studio, though I have never used it myself. I got the demo once and the learning curve seemed steep. But it does have a lot of cool features I wish Ableton Live had. I usually hear of people making electronic music and EDM with it. I know you said you are still finding your style, but are there any that seem more appealing to you? I still don't really know what my style is, I love to do everything.

I am sure I have some tips laying around somewhere! But music is such a wide topic, I don't know if I could just come out with any and have them be helpful. But if you have anything particular let me know! I am best at mixing and mastering.

Musescore is cool. I have used it a bit and want to learn how to use it better.

Having dissonance can be nice, It can really add a unexpected twist to a song. Having a repetitive bass line seems like it would be good in a song with lots of dissonance. Like the bass would keep the song stable while the chords or melody did crazy stuff.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to post on the forums!

As someone who plays a few instruments, (Guitar. Ukulele, Bass, ect.) I like to make music. I enjoy taking the time to write and compose something from the bottom of my heart that truly means something to me and I hope others will enjoy just as much as I do!

    Have a wonderful day/night!
