SPOILER Was Urelix Right?

Is Dr. Urelix Really Sacrificing for the Greater Good?

  1. Yes, Golems are necessary. Sacrifice a few to save many.

    15.9%
  2. No, what he's doing is morally wrong. The cities will do fine without Golems.

    20.7%
  3. There's a middle line here, he's partially right and partially wrong.

If you've completed An Iron Heart Part II, you know how this ends, and most likely you chose Detective either because Greaves of Honor is just better or you believed it was morally right. However, is Dr. Urelix's line of reasoning valid? After all, he does sacrifice a few villagers, but as he said, he singlehandedly produces an important and extremely powerful line of defense: Iron Golems. In Ragni, Golems are main line of defense, and the Golems are definitely much stronger than the ordinary soldiers. If Golems weren't around, would Ragni and Troms still be standing? Would Wynn be this corrupted province akin to the Corrupted Dungeons? After Bob is gone, who can Wynn citizens turn to? Iron Golems are definitely a huge part of defense in Wynn and Gavel. I saw a huge party of Zombie Pigmen the other day coming toward Ragni, the only reason the city didn't get flooded was because the Pigmen were thwarted by Golems. As we know, humans are already at their practical limit: without incredibly powerful heroes like the player or Bob, they could be screwed: they start fighting (or training) at 2 years old and still have trouble against corruption. So, is it the right thing to report Urelix? Are his actions really for the greater good?

The thing is, Golems are a fusion of metal and flesh. Urelix was creating Golems out of unwilling people - kidnapping them and turning them into either a fully fledged defender of cities or an abomination that is neither Villager nor Golem, but a Mistake.

While Golems form a large bulk of the defense in cities, keep in mind that Wynncraft existed long before the Gavel update where Golems guarded the city walls as well (I was not around in much earlier versions, so someone has to check it out), and citizens of Wynn most likely took the Golems for granted. Also, keep in mind that the overall lore wasn't fully fleshed out yet.

Don't take everything at a face value in terms of gameplay and story integration, though.

Who would be willing though and would there be enough of them to meet the demand?

Also lore gets changed so you can’t rely on older versions of Wynncraft lore-wise.

I’m assuming you need some sort of sentient humanoid creature to make golems, so that rules out the undead, monsters, or animals. Criminals would still be highly unethical too and would fall under cruel and unusual punishment. Especially since it’s as final as death.

Still unethical as abducting random people with the disadvantage of them being weaker and more likely to die during the process.

Maybe Greenskins might work? But they may be too physically different from Villagers and they have the same problem as the undead and other monsters: they’re super dangerous.

I haven't done the quest in a while, but how much sentience do the villagers retain after being turned into golems? Are they unable to control their body and have to watch themselves slaughter hordes of undead to defend towns? Can they even feel pain after being made into a golem?

Okay, that’s a bit unfair. The Orcs and the Greenskins are meant to be the zombies of Gavel; they’re just made out as the generic baddies and that’s it, with the exception of the Gerts. Its therefore completely pointless to debate their personhood or if ethics applies to them, especially since they’re already painfully generic fantasy creatures.

I mean, the game has a quest about how unfair treatment of animals is bad (shown in the gerts' questline) and animals are even dumber than greenskins
Being generic or not doesn't matter because then we could apply that to elves, dwarves and humans as well

it seems that we’ve run into a paradox, in that it wouldn’t be ethical to “golemize” intelligent creatures, but any creature that can be ethically “golemized” wouldn’t be able to effectively carry out its duty.

i still stand by the criminal idea.

But advocating against animal cruelty isn’t the same as saying that we shouldn’t sacrifice animals like humans for the greater good like banning animal testing. Especially in this situation where the golems mean the difference of being brutally slaughtered by hordes of monsters.

The Elves are generic, yes, but in the opposite way; heck they’re portrayed as being the most morally superior because of their connection to the Light. While humans, villagers, and dwarves are portrayed as flawed, they’re given a lot more time to make it complicated.

Whereas the Greenskins are just portrayed as violent, ruthless savages that raid and steal. While Gerts are portrayed more sympathetically, they’re also portrayed as the dumbest race/species in the game. So it’s also saying that there are inherent differences between species in terms of personhood.

What about people who are wrongly convicted? Especially since Gavel’s society is portrayed to be corrupt. Not to mention that the death penalty isn’t and shouldn’t be used for everyday crimes. Which is effectively what their fate is, if not worse.
