I agree with that, but the game doesn't let them experiment. Elemental Exercise is the only real "teaching" quest, and it's so poorly done that it misleads players until some player who does know the actual effects of elemental defenses tells them. Even then, many don't believe it (trusting the game over a random player) even though elex's exaggeration is completely wrong.
Skillpoints: It's not clearly explained what exactly they do and how much of an impact they have. I called out the statements that were extremely misleading regarding how skillpoints worked.

The stuff you said was far less of an issue though, and I apologize for going hard on it.

Explore and just do whatever. Enjoy this, as after your second or third play through you just start power leveling and doing other really "optimal" stuff, so enjoy this. The first play through is always the most fun, as you are completely new and don't know what to do. Cherish that, as you can't do that again. I know from experience.
