Spin Attack Question

So I know that the third upgrade of spin attack has the ability to steal others good buffs and cleanse yourself of any bad ones you previously had, but must you hit an entity to do this or could you just spin attack in the middle of nowhere and lose whatever random effect you have? Thanks in advance!

 

yeah it works anywhere and anytime, you don't need to hit anything, and spin attack cancel only the effects that caused by a monster or a mob, it doesn't cancel potions
or food, that's what i know
