What weapon tier is Dodegar’s Ultimate Weapon?

(A regression analysis)


Dodegar’s Ultimate Weapon is a dagger given in the quest “The Ultimate Weapon”. It has a level minimum of 75, and a fast attack speed with 1-3 base damage. The following post is an analysis, using regression techniques, to find the weapon tier of Dodegar’s Ultimate Weapon and thus determine its viability in the mid-late game.

We must first make a few assumptions about weapons and tiers:

• Unique items are “tier 1”, rare items are “tier 2”, and legendary items are “tier 3”.
  • Mythic daggers lacked sufficient sample size to perform effective regression.
• A hypothetical “level minimum 0” dagger would do no damage.
  • This is just to make the math cleaner, it doesn’t really affect the result of a level 75 weapon
• Damage scales with level with the same proportions as it does with basic weapons.
  • Basic weapons are the game creators’ way of telling us exactly how much better weapons are supposed to get with increasing level, so we could, for example, say that a certain tier is 15% better than basic weapons and that would hold approximately true for all level ranges.
• No matter how low a tier, it should not get worse with increasing level.
  • This should be true even for negative tiers.
    
  • Given this, and the fact that higher tiers get really powerful, an exponential model was used for how damage increases with increasing tier.
• Finally, only raw melee dps was used to calculate the regressions.
  • I tried to pick weapons that relied mainly on dps though
    
  • Also Dodegar’s Ultimate Weapon doesn’t have any wacky identifications.
    
  • This is another reason not to include Fabled/Mythic daggers - they rely heavily on characteristics outside of raw dps.

Then, regressions were made using LoggerPro to determine the relative quality of the weapon tiers (Figure 1)


In the plots, the “A” coefficient is how much more damage the tier does compared to the Basic tier, which does 0.043x^2 + 0.86x damage (where x is the level minimum). To summarize:

• Unique tier is 19.4% better
  
  
• Rare tier is 34.7% better
  
  
• Legendary tier is 52.3% better

So, to determine exactly how tiers affect damage, another regression was used, this time exponential to reflect the assumptions (Figure 2).




The exponential model fitting the data set is:
Relative DPS = 1.054 * 1.131^(tier)

To find the tier of Dodegar’s ultimate weapon, we must first find the relative DPS of it compared to a basic weapon of the same level minimum:
Relative DPS = Actual DPS/Expected DPS =
(2.5 * (1+3)/2) / (0.043*75^2 + 0.86*75) = 5/306.375 = 0.01632

Then, we solve the exponential equation:
0.01632 = 1.054 * 1.131^(tier)
0.01548 = 1.131^(tier)

The next step is to look up the information about Dodegar’s Ultimate Weapon (Figure 3).



From this information, we can infer that Dodegar’s Ultimate Weapon is Legendary, or from our assumed definition, Tier 3.

Conclusions: Legendary (or Tier 3) items are typically viable in combat and worth a fair amount of emeralds, and despite some concerns about this particular weapon, such as the lack of powder slots, these findings suggest that there is potential to use this weapon at a mid-high level. To capitalize on the findings, I will as of now be personally investing in the Dodegar’s Ultimate Weapon market, and will buy it for 4 LE.

Suggestions for future research:

• Test the weapon against various mobs and bosses that benefit from a neutral build, such as Qira from the “Qira Hive” quest
  
  
• Attempt to make a crafting recipe emulating the extreme features of the weapon, such as the “Untradable” tag.
