Now first of all i am not salted and i am not another admin (no shit), and everything i am going to say is going to be things only salted has said himself.

I decided to make this since at first i thought Salted will/already have announced it by himself somewhere but i noticed that he did not, and i wanted to make things clear for everyone else.

    Yesterday, March 16th 2020
Right after the spring sale announcement.

Well yes indeed, that settles it.
The lag isn't from the server itself but from their host.

The host could've gotten too much traffic lately, the pandemic most likely made it worse and harder for things to reach them, etc.
There are hundreds of reasons as to why the host is suffering quite a lot
Its also been happening to discord lately, where outages happen for sometimes from a few minutes to a couple of hours.

Assuming and complaining isn't going to get us anywhere there's a pandemic going around and we're not here to talk about it and it's causing a bit of chaos in some places and we just have to be patient with all of these things happening right now.
My point here is to just make things clear That the lag isn't from Wynncraft, they can't do much about it and they're also already working to get it sorted as soon as possible.
Salted said it himself that he doesn't like people suffering and complaining about lag

So that settles it folks, you can stop complaining and asking the Wynn team to remove the lag and i hope that you understand everything i just said in this thread.

    Have a nice day fellas.
    this was needlessly long lol

Didn't expect people to care enough to make a thread about that stuff, but I should have seen this coming knowing how annoying lag is.

Let me explain a little bit about server hosting and why fixing lag is trickier than it seems. Wynncraft isn't hosted by ourselves, in fact no Minecraft network is. We pay a company to rent dedicated hardware for this (yea the meme about me hosting Wynncraft in my basement is false). It would be quite costly to do it ourselves and we aren't big enough to make it worth it. We need powerful machines, with high bandwidth, with DDOS protection and with constant support and maintenance. Since a little more than a year ago now our host started having some serious packet losses with (mostly) EU people on certain providers. The big disadvantage about using a host is that when that happens, you have to try REAL hard to convince them the problem is on their side and it's a little hard to do so. We have been trying for a while to tell them to look into that stuff but unfortunately they haven't found it worth it to investigate, even after sending some proof. I'm guessing Wynncraft just isn't big enough for them to justify it. We tried to improve on the problem by adding a EU network to Wynn (since the majority of issues came from EU players), and it did help some people but unfortunately not everyone, the problem is still there.

This is why sometimes you can play Wynncraft with no lag at all, and other times it's completely unplayable and you can't even login. It all depends on our host's network and lately the internet as a whole has seen a surge in users because of quarantine, making lag much worse (for some). We're not perfect ourselves of course, but usually when you got some people able to play lag free and others not, something on the host side is wrong. The best solution left is switching our whole network but this is a big ordeal. We have to find something within our budget, with the needed hardware/network to support what we need and with proper DDOS protection (Wynn gets ddosed almost every other day but thankfully we're protected. funnily enough DDOS protection is by far the most expensive thing about having a network. if everyone was being nice instead we could run this whole thing on a much smaller budget but what can ya do). Then we have to move everything over which will take a big amount of work. It's all feasable, but it's a bit more mid to long-term than short-term. It would be silly to rush this and end up with a worse network.

It's been the #1 thing bothering me for a while now, probably to the point where I'm annoying our dev team more than helping. Just don't worry, we're looking into this and have been for a while but don't expect a quick fix.

I always had lag but because of my internet, and I recently got a better connection. As this no-lag-because-of-my-end experience is new to me I have a question. If the problem is with the host of Wynncraft, this means that no matter how good my internet is I will still have lag?

Not complaining btw, I know this isn’t anyone’s fault, we have a pandemic going on and everyone is using more internet than normal. Also, a little lag kills no one except your in-game characters a few times, it is totally endurable!

I honestly don't like it when people keep complaining to the point of even insulting the devs when it's not even their fault, some people have no care for others and it bothers me so I figured I'd publish the word.

Generally, thank you for explaining the entire situation in more depth, having people understand your situation is important in my opinion and have a nice day.

Well it COULD improve lag on your side assuming that there is any lag from Wynn that you're getting (which probably isn't much but it's something I guess) and not the host itself. Most likely it won't improve much if at all, unless your connection to Wynn is really bad rn.

Yea I see the problem but I have a question: Is there a possibility for you to solve the connection issues with EU servers? I'm an european player and the problem is that I can almost never connect. Somehow it is more difficult to connect to EU servers that to connect to US servers. And when I'm playing on the US servers its almost impossible to beat Orange Cyble ... please remove Orange Wybel and the 3 player requirement when entering Bobs Tomb Could that be solved or is it the same problem?

Only way i can think of would probably be donation and most importantly patience.
We're just gonna have to be patient and live through this lag till everything is A-okay once again.

Well it's a good thing you're not publicly declaring your host, though doesn't seem to be OVH at the very least (from my experiences OVH is a good service for mid to mid-large servers).

If DDOS protection takes the biggest cut out of wynncrafts income, then wouldn't paying a little bit extra for a different, more reliable host be more than doable? If it is a professional you lack to carry out the transition OR the money to hire one, then wynncraft could look into new ways to monotize their game.

From my experience playing the game again since late august, the server has seen a notable decline in performance since 1.19 came around and has gotten worse despite the playercount normalizing again. Is this simply the host failing more often or does wynncraft require more resources all of a sudden?

I've recently come back to the server after being away since about 2015 and I was overjoyed to find out that there were EU servers. I'd been playing on 120 ping since I was about 13. Shame I can hardly ever get onto the server. I don't know if this is for everyone, but the lag is almost exclusively in the hub world, where it takes about 5 minutes for me to be able to select a world to connect to. Once I'm in game, as long as I connected to the EU hub and then to EU servers, and not to NA hub and then to EU servers, there is little-to-no lag. TL:DR the lag is in the hub world and not in game, for me at least.
Thanks for making the server that defined part of my childhood 7 years ago and I hope these issues can be fixed ASAP
Edit: oh god I still have the same username as I did in 2015 oh god oh no

I only just started playing on this server a few weeks ago and never had a problem with lag. In those few weeks the number of players were just under 500 the most players I saw were over 800ish. But in the last week(s), at the time of day I would see the under 500 players on, I saw the numbers double. Now at any time of day I am now seeing 1000 to 1500ish players (or more) on and the lag is vicious. I use to log in and see maybe 3 to 5 players in the HUB but now I can't count how many players there are in a HUB. I'm guessing they are all having the same problem as me. Now I can't get HUB to render let along get into the game. With all of us at the same time trying to log in servers just can't cope and we all lose connection before we can even choose a character. On rare occasions I might even get into a game but some of it won't render and I stare off into emptiness. But if it does render and I get to move I usually find I can't shoot or I'm being attacked by something I had passed ages ago and I no longer see it. Now, however, I just can't play at all because I'm kicked off from lack of connection. The problem is this is a great game and it's popularity is making it lag. It's the creator's fault for making such a brilliantly addictive game. Shame on you for not sucking!

Is this issue causing lag in both the lobby and the worlds, or just the lobby? Because I'm getting lag in the worlds too (when I manage to connect)...not sure if that's a separate problem.
