Quest "taproot" Problem

I'm having a small bit of trouble with the quest "Taproot". At the stage where the Witch tells you to dispose of the dead plant, when I throw the plant onto the red carpet where the disposal is, nothing happens. If I press the button at all, I hear a lot of loud dinging noises. I would like to continue on the quest, so any help would be appreciated.

 

After you press the button there should be a rainbow trail that you will have to follow. It will lead you to the mountain.

 

I don't see any rainbow trail, just what appears to be a footstep followed by lots of dinging

 

The trail will be particles that change colors and are spaced out leading you to the mountain. If you don't see the trail, just follow the path up the mountain (the path has large mushroom along it) and you will see a cave with a bridge.
