Browsing though the web, I haven't seen many new memes pop up...

Either the new memes are still hatching out of their eggs, or they haven't risen up yet and will see the light of day only to die about a week later.

    So, what've we gotten?

    I agree. Essay below:

There’s a reason the words ”meme” and ”gene” are so similar. They are pretty much the same thing.

A meme is a piece of information that replicates itself (you see it, boom you are infected) and spreads. It also evolves (every edit to a meme can be thought of as a mutation). If the mutation is good (in this case, funny), it spreads rapidly. It’s pretty much just evolution, and has existed via word-of mouth forever.

Every joke you hear is a meme. Even this post is a meme.

Now, before the internet, they spread quite slow. But with the advent of sites like reddit, they have began to spread faster.

In order to get people to spread them (upvote, share, repost etc) the memes have adapted so that short image memes are often the winners, as they are quick to digest and understand.

So, as a result of that, even screenshots of a twitterpost can become internet-famous.
The result is a system where you can absorb memes easier than ever before, and memes you can understand the context for are good.

So, when a major event happens, people start making memes of it, because you already know the context and can digest it fast. Thus, when a major event happens, there are memes of it, but as that event becomes less relevant, the memes get less frequent because the spotlight was stolen by a new trend. Remember the WW3 memes like 20 days ago? Me neither.

This is because the current system favours memes that you can easily digest, and thus memes relating to current events. But those memes also die as soon as that event is over.

Tl:dr: This post is a thought germ, and NOW IT’S IN YOUR HEAD! FOREVER! HAHAHAHA!

January memes suck most of the time (last year had lemon car, for instance) so I'm kinda glad we seemed to have avoided them altogether this year. At the same time: garbage memes are also fun.
