I was not a fan of this. I was hoping for lore, not an awkward reference. Like you said, it just doesn't fit.

I always imagined the memory loss being some sort of magical forcefield, kept in place by the royalty, that once you cross its border, it wipes your memory. It would work for the corkus lore, crossing the field in the mountains at some point and wiping their memories if they didn't get caught escaping. But I can just keep that as my personal headcanon of how the memory loss works

 

People of corkus lost their memory when leaving Fruma, and this brainwashing can't apply to them so...

 

I completely forgot about that... Maybe they could do a retcon and make the Corkians remember Fruma, but make what they know of Fruma as an ultimate discovery of Corkus or something and add a few mentions of Fruma here and there. After all, it has been hundreds of years since they left so they wouldn’t know what has happened in Fruma since then.

The old explanation just seemed too convenient anyway and more of a way to not spoil Fruma.
