Recently, YouTube just got fined for $170k for violating the Child Online Privacy Protection Act (or COPPA for short). This has prompted YouTube to tell its content creators to start marking ALL of their works (not just recent ones) as if they are made for kids or not.

What is COPPA? COPPA was made in 1998 and basically means that any websites that collects data on it's users (youtube, google, facebook, etc) can NOT collect data from users under the age of 13 (AKA <4745 days alive on the planet earth).

A lot of people are in fear of what this will mean for their content, which has lead to fear mongering and a petition to change these "outdated" laws.

Honestly, if you were to hear about COPPA BEFORE all this YouTube shit happened, wouldn't you be in support of it?
Lets be honest, when we were kids we were to dumbest pieces of shit and as soon as we saw that super cool G.I.-robo-dino toy or cutey-furby-spa toy, we all though "I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED IT!!!!!!!"

I am in support of COPPA, I think its good for preventing companies from getting early data on young children who's parents are too damn lazy to check on what their looking at.

If you want more info on this, don't watch the YouTube videos on it
There is ALOT of misinformation going around, including that you'll get fined $42,000.

Currently I've only seen 2 videos that actually bloody understand whats going on.
    THIS video by PhoenixSC
    And THIS video by MrEnter

Watch them both and let me know what you think about all this.

I heard that it was only UP to $42,000, taking into account the income of the creator. Is this true?

That's where things are still confusing...

From reading the blog, its appears that you'll only be fined if you're a company?
    But... I'm not 100% sure.
I know there are ALOT of solo creators who make children's content ONLY for money. cough morgz cough
So, maybe they'll only fine certain people?

I highly doubt they would fine someone like StampyLongNose, who mainly just entertains younger children while also making it a living.
But like I said I'm still unsure.

When I heard it from YouTubers like TerminalMontage it sounded like this penalty applies to any creator that gains money from ad revenue. Either way, they’re still private entities and still get demonitized, so thats mostly why I think that.

Side note, is it true that YouTube is getting rid of demonitization?

Hell if I know mate, YouTube is just going back and forth from limbo to hell, over and over, never ending.
If people who are making kids content and (from what I've heard) aren't having those videos able to get monetized anymore, then I guess the only way for Youtube to make money is to advertise on non-kids content.

But honestly, If its true, I can bet people are gonna be exploiting it to the fullest potential. just like they did before, which isn't a big surprise.
There's no guarantee that they will get rid of demonetization, but if they do, who knows what'll happen. God knows they keep fucking up with new bullshit community guidelines that everyone has to deal with.

It's always something, isn't it? I can't imagine trying to make a living out of YouTube with the rules changing and an ad-apocalypse or two every year.

i only want them to block the data collection from children, nothing else.

look at the situation of YouTube, Pew is gone due to relevant reason.
