I'm posting this with a simple question, is Wynncraft to hard, too easy or just right to you?
I'm asking the question out of interest, as personally I think Wynncraft's difficulty is very build based.
I also have the 6th highest playtime on the server, so of course, my opinion of how easy or hard the game is could be very skewed.

I hope to form some kind of discussion of the topic, thus why I put it here on the forums.

    --
A separate question I want to ask here. Is Wynncraft hard enough for an MMO?
Maybe you feel Wynncraft is good enough as a single-player game, but how hard is it with other people? Do you ever need other people? Really this is the same question, but I wanted to point this out specifically, as I feel like people would start to answer on how hard they think the game is alone.

Too easy imo, all you need is a decent build and potions and you can beat anything

I agree yeah, but as druser pointed out to me, I have far too many hours, and for all, I know the game is hard as fuck for someone coming in the first time.
People like us, with good skills, and a good build, probably have a far easier time.

Overall I do agree, and I do think the games "Hardest" challenge isn't hard enough, as I can do it by myself, and honestly, I think thats sad, as its an MMO.
Which honestly, makes me feel like Wynncraft is a single-player game with other people, and less an MMO.

I think Wynncraft is fairly easy. In my experience, I simply walked through all the quest and grind. In endgame, I would ask build creators and get the intended items for it. All this just needs time.

The only "hard" challenges (hic) is just fucking grinding for hours upon hours. Not the fun type of hard.

There's the reason why people make challenges for themselves / avoid stat pots / try various builds / join HIC Gang..

tbh overpowered stat pots ruined the game

Outside of wybel, adamastor and LI? no, it is very easy, but those 3 things are hard enough to sway me into saying its *probably* fine as long as dern has a difficult thing.
Bob on level is also a massive undertaking.
Enough people struggle with just their generic first playthrough that i don't think you can make that any harder.

Wynncraft is super easy until you get to what was once endgame stuff (amadel & bob) at level 70. Then it gets easy again until endgame (qira hive is an exception cause psychomancer). Now I'm not good at this game at all so I do definitely have a hard time with wybel, qira and li but for only 10 eb you can buy cheat potions at ahmsord to beat everything easily.

And don't even get me started on multiplayer:
    - Doing literally anything with 2 or more people makes it easy as balls
    - You can party up for li with 6 people but the tanks/healers won't get the tokens from bosses
    - If someone dies in an li party they're fucked
    - Nether has been down who knows how long
    - There's barely any multiplayer synergy anyway; best is just for people to drop their buffs and then do as much damage to the boss as they can
I got a little off-topic, but Wynncraft is really not that much of a multiplayer game, more that it has multiplayer as a fun little side feature. And I think that's quite a sad time.

So what would I want to see? Multiplayer synergy, e.g. more buff spells for classes, multiplayer scaling, drops for everyone in a party, harder bosses that require multiplayer, harder bosses that are fair and can only be beaten once you know their spell pattern. (To name a few)

It’s more tedius than anything. Bosses are basically bullet sponges with the potential to one shot you wih a poor build but once you do have a good build there is literally nothing that can kill you besides really bad luck (like getting stuck on phase 4 of the cybel for 20 minutes). The difficulty isn’t “oh shit I need to find cover” difficulty, it’s “I’m whaling on a boss and goddamn this fight is a slog” difficultly

It's the list of @Selvut283's deaths in GM server while streaming.

He fought various bosses (which aren't in main server) with various builds but the result was... that.
(Their difficulty was between Hive and LI)

    no stat pots btw

    I'd say it's unevenly hard/easy.
The big majority of the game you can do alone (even though it's a multiplayer game :( ) without any big troubles.
But then some bosses are just a spike in the difficulty level, like Corrupter of Worlds or Bob.

Now I know bosses are supposed to be harder but, I think the gap between the normal, easy gameplay and bosses can sometimes be too big?

There are also very few quests where I just think it's too hard, on the contrary, I rarely die doing quests.

All my opinion, just to preface this because I do want to respond to this as it's an interesting topic, not just from my standpoint as a member of the CT, but maybe as someone who's interested in game design in general.

As I see it, wynncraft us an easy game. It's a casual style of play without much challenge there to push an average player to their limits. That being said, I think it should be easy with some exceptions. Wynncraft's playerbase, generally speaking, isn't going to be that of a hardcore player, right? It's gonna be a person who got Minecraft at some poikt, recently or not, and heard about this MMORPG made entirely within Minecraft and it draws their attention. The game is made so that the average Minecraft player can pick it up, experience all of its content and have fun with friends or make friends along the way. I don't see wynncraft as the game to draw in those who want a hardcore experience.

With all that said though, I think there's room for more catering towards those invested players. Yeah, there's things such as boss altars and Legendary Island, but even those don't necessarily bring challenge to the game. I'd say they're unique features, not challenges in the normal sense of the word.

Recently @SilverMirror linked me to a video about Minecraft (not wynncraft's) game design. The video went in depth about two key terms. Intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation (EM) is how the game drives the player to experience it. That's things such as questing, basic combat or anything that's naturally guided by the game itself. Intrinsic motivation (IM) is driven by the player themself. It's things that players would choose, of their own accord, to pursue.

EM is what the most players experience and it's how they'd play. They do what's in their quest book, fuck around and explore the world, open a chest or two, maybe run some dungeons if they feel like it all in the name of progression. They just want to experience the game, and have fun how they like to.

IM is what some/most people here, in the forums, are still playing for. They have their own interest in experiencing the game much more than the game itself drives you to. This encompasses basically every single thing you'd find at endgame. Things such as HIC, making a build, crafting (to an extent is IM but it's too grindy for me to rightfully classify it as that towards the end), loot running, getting involved in guilds, market things such as flipping mythics/opening a shop etc. These are all things that the player chooses to do because they want to, not because the game pushes or necessitates.

Basically any of the challenge of wynncraft is intrinsically motivated. There's very few exceptions such as some quests (Bob/Amadel or even Qira hive to an extent) that the game encourages you to do. I believe there's room for more intrinsically motivated challenges that have rewards attached to it. I don't think wynncraft's difficulty should change. Making it harder would alienate its main audience of the average curious Minecrafter, but there could be more to challenge the intrinsically motivated and reward them for seeking out challenge.

I'm not entirely convinced this was all cohesive, nor am I too worried about it. Some of it should have made sense. It's just an interesting topic because such a simple question could be interpreted and acted upon in many many different ways, and that's what gets me interested in game design. Anyways, it's 1AM so apologies for rambling, but I wanted to join in on the conversation. By no means am I experienced in anything game design related, but still. It's interesting =)

    Wow...
Well with this new-found knowledge, I can now also add that I think that EM in Wynncraft is about right, it's not to hard for noobs to make them leave, and it's not too easy for them to become lvl 100 in a day. It's a casual game.

Now im only lvl93, and haven't really experienced the endgame yet, but im guessing that IM isn't hard enough based on some of the conversations i've heard.

Yep! That's what I'm getting at. It isn't a game designed for those who are looking for challenges because of the engine it's built in. You'll get a much more casual audience because of it. There's some exceptions, of course.

And yeah, that's also what I'm getting at. While the game's difficulty is fine where it is, more could be done to entice, challenge and reward the more hardcore and invested players who seek out difficulty. It's definitely a conscious design choice, though.

Everything is pretty easy. Quest bosses are good difficulty.

Lategame chalenges like Qira, LI and Orange Wybel? I fail them even in massive groups.

Though I feel a bit of that is due to a poor build
